This is a question for Chris at SOG but anyone with info please jump in. I've searched the forums and many other sites but I'm not able to find out if there is a way to tell if a SOG Spec Elite II I want to buy is made with VG-10. Most sites have it listed as AUS8 but SOG shows lately as VG-10. Are there no visable differences between the old AUS8 and newer VG-10 Spec Elite II's??. I would like to buy one made with VG-10 since it is known as a better steel but the store I buy from can't determine if it is or not.

Thanks but until a few months ago it said AUS8 and most retailers likely have older stock. I stated that SOG listed it as VG-10 but I wouldn't assume all stock everyone has has turned over that fast.

I just received a Spec Elite l, its VG10 According to Warriors and Wonders description the Elite ll is AUS 8 the Elite l is VC10 either way there great knives.
I also recieved the Vulcan, its VG 10 I have a lot of knives, Spyderco's kershaws and a few Benchmades and I really love the Vulcan.
It's an awesome knife, even if some don't think much of the SOG brand, this one is a keeper . In fact I am contemplating buying another for back up :D

Any Spec Elite that was shipped out of SOG in the past 6 months is definitely VG-10. I think the switch was completed earlier but I do not know the exact date. The Spec Elite II was a the last one of the Arc-Lock knives to switch to VG-10. I know this information is not as exact as you would have liked but it is the best answer I can give you right now.

Thanks Chris, I spoke with Jay at Warriors and Wonders and the stock he has, was ordered and shipped within the last couple months so is very likely VG-10. Now my only problem is which pocket I need to give up for this monster.

i bought a spec elite 1 from basspro march 2008 would that be a AUS 8 knife? are the new ones marked VG-10 ?
