I have just registered to ask people that must know...

On various web sites I see either AUS8, or VG-10 steel specified for this knife. I have read here that original knives were made from AUS8, later to be switched to VG-10.

So I called SOG CS this morning and asked if there was a way to tell the difference. CS rep replied that "old AUS8 knives had liner lock, new VG-10 knives have ARC lock" I said that I do not believe that to be correct, so the CS rep said "that is what both my product manager and CS manager told me"

So there are two things here. One is that I am pretty sure AUS8 knives were manufactured with Arc lock, so I would still like to know how to tell the diffrerence from VG-10 knife. The second thing is that SOG support was, by that answer, reassuring everyone that they have a VG-10 knife. You tell me what to make of it.

You are correct in that the Arc-lock version had both AUS8 and VG-10. I will talk to CS about this and provide them with the correct information on this.

As for telling the difference, unfortunately there is not really any way to tell with out doing a metallurgy test. However having said that, we did make the switch from AUS to VG-10 well over two years ago, possibly even three. I would pretty confidently say that if you are buying a Spec Elite knife today it be the VG-10 version on not he AUS8, but I can not guarantee it.

Oh, I just thought of a way to possible tell if you can take a look at the packaging. In the box should be a small SOG brochure, on the brochure below the SOG address and phone number should be a version text. something like version 07.09. This will be the date that the brochure was printed. If this date is after 01.08 you can be sure the knife is VG-10.

Hope this helps.

does the same hold true for the spec elite 1?
the amazon page says AUS 8 under product description, whilst saying VG-10 in the specs. lots of online stores seem to have not changed the specs, many still say AUS 8.
