I have been looking to buy a sog knife, in particular a Trident,
I have heard that sog uses 420 stainless, all I'm trying to say is that seems like a pretty middle of the road steel for such a pricy knife, don't get me wrong, I like their knives, just wondering why they don't use something better.

Hi Die Hard,

Thanks for the question. SOG does not use 420 in any of its knives (but does use it on parts of our tools).

Where 420 is often thought of an a non-quality steel for knives, we use ATS-34, AUS8, AUS6, BG-42, and SK-5 (high carbon) steel in our knives.

The Trident is made of AUS8 Stainless steel.

If you have further question, please let me know.

Hi Ron,
I have a SOG catalog that says the Trident is made of 440C. Did SOG change the steel in the Trident? When did they do this? Thank you!

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your question. Most of SOG's knives are proudly Japanese made, using outstanding, quality steels of Japanese origin. There are several Japanese steels that have near U.S. equivalents. Many years back, when AUS steels were not readily recognized in America, our promotional material used terminology the U.S. market more easily understood. In this case, AUS steels (Japanese made steels) were explained by using the 440 (U.S. made steels) labels.

The Trident has always been AUS8, which is an outstanding performing blade steel. We have (and are) updating all our material. This conversion process started over a year ago.

I hope this has answers your questions. Let me know if there is anything else I can do or explain. :)
