Hello all-

I'm a new collector and I own a SOG stgfsa-97.

My question is: Is there typically a little "side to side" play in the blade when opened? It is new-in-box.

TIA for any replies.

Most I have looked at do have a slight amount, any tighter and they would not open properly out of the box I don't think.

Having said that, I tune mine, and most that want a "really tight" blade does.

A 5/64th allen head will tighten "usually" if the loctite in the pivot is not too tight, (usually not).

I have tuned all mine and my sons Flash IIs and they work perfectly.

To tune: Insert allen into right side of pivot, turn clock wise a tiny bit, now try to open blade, if it opens slow, it should be close to being where you want it to be.

Now check your side to side play, it should be almost all gone.

Now add a couple drops of "light" oil into pivot area, open several times until blades snaps open, this should do it.

All the above "could" void your warranty, so if you think you can not do it correctly, send it to SOG and ask if they can correct the side to side blade play.

I'm sure they will help if they can.

Thanks Kindly Robbie-

I plan on using this knife for everyday use. Now, if I can only find a 5/64 allen wrench in my myriad of tools.-lol- Would gun oil work well?

I also plan on purchasing another one for collecting purposes as well and will check with SOG about any warranty impacts.

Thanks again!

There should be no problem, just make sure your wrench is seated properly, no big deal here.'

Gun oil will work perfectly.

The key here is to get it tight, then eliminate most of this friction with oil, the result is a tight pivot but the blade still opens freely.

Well...I tried the 5/64 allen wrench at the pivot point and it doesn't seem to fit(seat properly). I even purchased a new wrench. Could it be an "odd" size wrench that is needed?

I now own two STGFSA-97's-One gray and one green handled!:D

Is one more common than the other?

It is a 5/64 allen, it may need to be tapped gently into hole............or..........if you have a torx T-8.........it will fit even tighter than the allen.

Hope this helps.
