Hi all!
Recently I was looking for a large bowie type knife for general field use, collectability, camping etc.
After much looking and comparing, mostly online, I decided on the SOG Super Bowie and ordered one.
While I couldn't find one to inspect in person, and I couldn't find any online reviews, I still felt this was the right knife. I have some prior experience with SOG products and they have a solid reputation for the price range. I liked the look of the knife being reminiscant of the MACVSOG knives it is based off- the brush with history is a nice extra to owning this knife.
Upon recieving the knife I have to say I am not disapointed. It is a very nice knife. The grip, while large fits my relativly small hands comfortably. The stacked leather washer handle while smooth does not feel slick in my hand- I feel confidant in my grip on the knife. The balance is outstanding, important for such a large, beefy knife! The edge is very sharp, specialy for a knife this thick, and the point is extremely sharp! The TiNi coating seems very durable and cosmeticly is very nice. The leather sheath is nice and well made.
Here is my problem- I really like this knife. This is my first SOG fixed blade knife and while I know the reputation that backs them, I am hesitant to actualy use this knife for fear of messing it up. I have used Cold Steel knives before and while they hold up, after some hard use I've blunted tips, gouged and worn coatings, and just plain made them fugly (though still functional)
I actualy ordered a SOG Seal Pup Elite today so I would (hopefully) have a knife I would feel more comfortable "beating on"!
My question here is, does anyone have any "practical field" experience with either the SOG Super Bowie or the SOG Bowie 2.0? If so, please share your experiences here- Maybe it will make me more comfortable actualy USING this knife insead of just looking at it!
I would also like to take a moment to thank the people at SOG for producing well engineered, quality products at an affordable price. I do or have owned-
SOG Powerlock multi tool. I love this tool and as soon as I had an opprotunity to pick one up I drawered my Gerber Deisal for it.
SOG Fusion 'hawk- very good hawk for the price. I will eventualy break the handle, I'm sure- I have on every hawk I've owned, but it looks to be easily replacable. Good, hard working tool!
SOG Flash 2 knife- While I was impressed with the quality of this knife, I was disapointed that the clip was not at the other end of the knife. Made it very awkward for me to deploy. I wound up trading it for a CRKT M21-14 the next day based primarily on that feature. It seems that most (all?) of SOGs clipped folders are made this way. If the clip was reversable to either end, I'm sure I would own at least one SOG folder too.
Thanks all!
Peace
