Can someone post their experience with this knife either good, bad or indifferent. I'm currently in the market so any reviews would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I bought one a couple of years ago. Haven't used it too much, but I did take it into the field and chopped a tree limb or three. Very Effective, but not quite as heavy-in-the-blade as necessary to keep from getting some pain in the hand due to shock. (I like my Tigershark best for serious tree chopping).

A minor annoyance was that the little nut that holds the handle together became loose. When I got home I un-spun the nut, put some blue Loctite on the thread, then tightened the nut really really tight. Haven't had any loosening problems since. My recommendation would be to remove & Loctite the nut.

All in all, a fabulous knife !! Definitely a handful too, it is one big knife in the hand.

Cheers,

Carl

Yeah, it's handle heavy. And in my opinion, over priced.

I finally got to put some miles on mine recently, and I was pretty pleased with the performance. It's not a great chopper, but it's a good (large) do-it-all design. I did do a little chopping, batoning, general woods use type stuff, and I was happy with the way it handled everything. It's a little heavier than I expected, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just surprising. The only complaint I have about it is that the finger grooves were spaced way too small for me. The grooves on the Super Bowie (with a longer handle) are smaller/closer together than the groves on the Sog Tech Bowie? That's just kind of backwards, if you ask me! An easy fix, though:thumbup: 5 minutes with a dremel, and another 5 with a heat-gun and some Sno-Seal to re-waterproof the handle, and I was able to open up the first and last grooves enough to be comfortable for me.

Walter,
You wouldn't have a pic of your modded super bowie would ya? Not that I am a fan of the Sog styled bowie or anything!

Tom, this is the best I can do right now.

If you look closely (click on the thumbnail to make it larger), you can see how the first and last finger grooves are extended past the white spacers. As they come from the factory all 4 grooves are fit in between the spacers. I don't mean to point any fingers, but I really wonder if anyone at Sog has used one of these-if you have small enough hands to fit your fingers into the grooves, there's NO way your hands are going to be long enough to wrap around the large handle itself:eek::confused: Unless you've got hands like ET:p Aside from that, if your first finger were in the groove, you'd be a long way from the edge-right about 2", killing your leverage, and the edge of the groove is in the wrong spot when you choke up (at least for me)!

However, I do like the knife enough that I'm going to keep working the handle down until it fits me like a glove! I like leather handles, and I really like the lines of this knife:D It's not a lot of work to pare down the handle, even with files and sandpaper, to get it to where it fits just right. I just wish it had come from the factory as comfortable as my Tech Bowie!

Thanks,
You can def see where you are fixing it. I have searched everywhere for a picture of a SOG bowie without the handle to see what the tang looks like. That would be my only reservation about adjusting the finger grooves too deeply that I bit into the tang depending on the "height" of it. Oh well you won't have that problem on mine.;).

Thank you for the reviews. I found one for a price i couldn't pass up on, can't wait....

How well does the edge hold up on the Super Bowie? Do you have any problems keeping it sharp?

SK-5 is sharp steel that takes an easy edge. Still, the Tech and is my fav over the Super bowie. Mine weighs 17.4 oz but just doesn't chop well enough for reasons already stated. Handle weight, but the leather washers are awesome. Wish I had an old Seki S-1.

Grinder, I don't think there is Sk-5 on the Super Bowie. Its AUS 8. If I am wrong I will buy two super bowies and send you a pic of me double chopping a Charlie Tuna can. The one in oil not the politically correct spring water! Yum.

Sorry, I had the S-1 on the brain. Super bowie is Aus-8 just like the new Tech bowie. The blade does take an easy edge though. Love the TiNi finish also.
