Well, I just got back from a job in Vieques, which ate a lot of my equipment including a great ontario machete, a compass and my favorite field knife. To replace the lost knife I bought the Team Leader, it's a great mid-size knife and I'm glad that SOG is returning to good steel. I was very impressed with the balance and general feel of the knife in hand, and have used it to cut and skin kiwis with impressive results. It also cuts steak well. My only complaints so far are that the sheath is just about useless. It's good leather, but the snap closure is defective, so I had to remove it, and the tip was not properly ground from the factor. It came with a small burr. A few minutes with a file and a sharpmaker fixed this, and it's something I've seen before on other knives (Spyderco) so not such a big deal. Overall I highly recommend this knife as a light duty belt/pack knife.

excellent ....am thinking of getting me one,,,sounds like a pretty good knife ..

I'm glad that SOG is returning to good steel.

I thought that 440C is very similar to the Aus8 they've been using? Correct me if I'm wrong..

This is strange, on the SOG website, it no longer states it is 440C but AUS8

SOG announced on this forum a few weeks ago that the steel is AUS-8 instead of the 440C previously thought. Aperently there was a mixup in communications or they changed steels at the last minute. Either way, it's AUS-8 with a good heat treat. :)

lagarto, thanks for the review. I've been waiting for the Team Leader to show up at a favored dealer. When it does I'll be buying one. Love the handle and blade shape.

So it's actually AUS 8. Not that I'm that big a steel snob, but I specifically paid the extra money to get the Team Leader over the Field Pup because I was led to believe that this was 440 C. That's somewhat disappointing. In other news I used the Team Leader to cut up an onion and some more steaks last night and dig out a nasty thorn and it handled all those chores well. Still very pleased with the knife overall.
