SOG "Team Leader" - Featuring Duratech's 20CV? Have you heard of it...

I dont know much for certain about duratech steel because i havent used it myself....... to my knowledge sog is the first and possibly only production manufacturer to use it so far. If memory serves me correctly it is manufactured by latrobe (who also produce bg-42)

There have been some custom makers switching to duratech from s30v most notably Rick Hinderer who had this to say:

As for using it I have done alot of testing with 20cv and am constantly impressed with all aspects of the steel....
But if you really want to see how it stacks up to other steels such as S30v go to Latrobe steels website and look at the data sheet for Duratech 20cv....if you look at the compsition of the steel compared to s30v it will make your eyebrow go up...alot of good stuff going on in there...
as well they have the results of a side by side edge retention when compared to s30v (14-2-4 CrMoV) Duratech 180% and s30v 145% this test was done by the Cutlery&Allied trade Research Association..so it is impartial ....of course this backs up my own results....so yes I do really like it...and as for the makers who dont ..well its probably because they arent using it and using another steel...

delkhouri,

That answers my question very well. Thanks... much appreciated. Also, you wouldn't happen to be retired military would you? Say, an Army Sgt. Major? Just a guess, but I might have the wrong person. If you are the man I'm thinking of your wife is a readiness NCO for the 196th MPAD of which I belong to... let me know.

Sincerely,

UPDATE: I can't access the PDF file from their website, is there any way you can list them, or post that article... ? Any suggestions?

You have to enable pop-ups from their website. If your browser or firewall has pop-ups blocked, or if you have a pop-up blocker like the Google tool bar, you won't see the data file. Enable pop-ups from that website, then try again.

Sorry FliGuyRyan i am not retired military... so i am the wrong guy.

Rick Hinderer has switched from S30V to Duratec 20 CV for his XM-18's. Here is info aboty this balde material:
Subcategory: Tool Steel; Stainless Steel; High Carbon Steel; Alloy Steel; Metal

Material Notes:
DuraTech 20CV is a highly wear resistant, powder metallurgy stainless tool steel. The steel containes a large volume of extremely hard vanadium carbides, wich provide excellent wear resistance. DuraTech 20CV contains the highest amount of chromium of any high-vanadium stainless steel currently available. The chromium-rich matrix provides outstanding corrosion resistance. DuraTech 20CV is a versatile stainless tool steel with a unique combination of high wear resistance, high corrosion resistance, good impact toughness, and excellent polishability. This combination of properties is the result of the fine grain size, small carbides, and superior cleanliness of the powder metallurgy (PM) microstructure. DuraTech 20CV excels in applications, which require a combination of high wear resisatance. The unique combinations of properties makes DuraTech 20CV an excellent steel for plastic injection feed screws, barrel liners, screw tips, and mold cavities, especially for plastic resins which contain abrasive fillers. Other applications inlcude food processing equipement, pelletizer knives, granulator knives, and high-performance custom knives.

Knarf and T.K.C.,

Thanks for your help and input. That sounds like a great steel on paper...

Hmm... I guess we'll see how it works out.
