Has anyone ever used the sog tomahawk? I found one on amazon for a 60% discount and was thinking about getting it for camping, plus with winter coming the spike on the back seemed like it would be good for breaking up ice chunks. But I wanted input from somebody who has actually used it. Or, if you know for a fact that there is a better alternative id like to hear it.

The kids and I beat the hell out of ours camping. It has taken more abuse than I ever expected. I have the big one, not the WalMart $20 Xmas special.

I have the Walmart one, the fasthawk, and while it isn't the greatest thing I've ever held it is surprisingly durable. I actually got bored and model mine one day, cut off about half the handle, sanded it and wrapped it in hemp and then sealed that. It made a much better handle and it actual IMO is much handier now. The tomahawk isn't for splitting huge pieces of wood so I don't need a long handle, and now it fits very good in my go bag. It can disassemble a wooden pallet in about a minute, and can be thrown and "stuck" every time. For what it is its great.

Well I decided to get one, and it arrived earlier today. I bought the full size version, and it fits my hand nicely. I dont care much for the sheath though. Its a lefty whereas im a righty, plus you have to drop the handle down through the top of it into a hole and it just doesn't feel right to me.
In the short time Ive had it, its killed some plastic bottles and an expired nutter butter (we were out of zombies and watermelons for some reason) and it cuts clean and true. Even used the spike to punch right through one of those heavy steel soup cans. All in all a solid little hawk.

Tomahawks always appealed to me and I went with the CRKT hawk with the hammer head on it. I find that a bit more useful, and I like the hawk. Don't have a great deal of need for it regardless... just another toy to be honest.

When they first came out, there was a problem with some people breaking the handles. They switched out the handle to the one that is offered today which I think makes the SOG a much better and stronger tool.
