SOG Tomcat III

Ugly as sin compared to the beautiful lines of the original Tomcat. Thats of course just my personal opinion.

As you dont tell us, what you intend for your dad to do with the knife, I cant offer much more than a personal observation on the looks.

Will the knife be used for light tasks or for heavy duty Work - describe your dads 'knife needs,' so to speak.

Give us a few clues as to the use; will the Tomcat be worn in a holster, in the pocket or will it be on a desk etc (its a relatively beefy knife).

Hey everyone I was wondering if anybody out there has the SOG Tomcat III, and if so what are your thoughts on it? I am shopping for my Dad's birthday coming up and thought it would make a perfect gift. I was thinking about snatching this one up: http://www.bladeq.com/all-items/sog-tomcat-iii-kraton-handle-nylon-sheath-w-arc-lock-sogs95-n/

Would make a nice present. It's a fairly large but attractive folder, f&f are excellent. Some folks don't like that is doesn't have a pocket clip, but it does come with a pouch.

Only negative I see is the one you linked to is about ~$20 to $50 too high.

I have the Tomcat II, and it's way to heavy for me to want to use. The blade stock is way to thick for a folder. The strongest blade is still only as strong as the hinge and lock on a folder.
That price is way too high, there are better knives out there for that price. I'm more partial to Spyderco or Benchmade, with a better steel, less weight, and a pocket clip. Just depends on how your Dad uses knives, and his sense of style.

If he's into traditional pocket knives, and want a very larger folder, look at the Sunfish or Elephant's toe.

I would definitely steer toward Benchmade or Spyderco for the same price point rather than SOG... YMMV. Good luck in your decision.

I own a Tomcat 3 with carbon fiber scale, and I love it. Yes, it's big. No, it doesn't have a pocket clip, but I still love it. Just for comparisons, I also own several Paramilitary 2, Military, BM710, and ZT0560, but the Tomcat feels more like a custom than any of the other knives that I own. I guess it all depends on how your dad likes to carry his knives. If he's old school and carries it in his pocket or in a sheath then great. If he likes to carry with a pocket clip then you might reconsider. If you want to stick with SOG and money is no object, then take a look at the Arcitech. It comes with a deep carry pocket clip, and it is an amazing knife.
