Ron,

I have an "old-style" SOG Trident that's soon to be on the way to me from a trade I made today. Can you tell me what the difference is between the new version (as pictured at the SOG web-site) and the "older" version?

I'll also have a Tomcat on the way from the same trade. It's also an "older" version with the "nail-nick", rather than the thumb-stud.:).

It's been a good SOG day!.:D.

The picture that the guy emailed to me isn't very clear, but it does look like it does have yellow spacers. I guess these must be brass rather than stainless? Does this mean that the hand-guard is also brass, rather than stainless?? (I really can't tell from the photo that he emailed to me.).

The one that I'm getting also comes with the cordura sheath, rather than the newer black leather sheath...

Hi Dann,

The Trident has gone through no changes (except for its sheath). The "white" spacers may have been different shades of white and some older white spacers may have faded more yellow over time.

The only definitive markings that will give a Tridents age is the earliest ones will be labeled Santa Monica (California), the middle years will say Edmonds (Washington), and the most recent will reference only Seki, Japan.

The oldest models came with rectangular nylon sheaths, the middle years had a nylon sheath with a tapered bottom, and the newest ones have the same sheath as the SOG Bowie (leather with a sharpening stone).

There’s really no way to pin down the years. If you have any of the info above, I can give you estimates.

I have seen some bad photos which have had more yellow spacers than they really were. No "brass" was ever used.

Hope this helps.

Ron,

As always, you have been a help! (And so is Bobby B)...Thanks!. The one that I'm getting has the fully rectangular nylon sheath (with two grommeted holes, top & bottom), so unless it's not its' original sheath (and I believe it is), then it looks like I'm getting the old, original model.:).

I have a feeling that that this link won't work (my computer hates me!.:D), but here is THE Trident that I'm getting:

Yup, I was right; It didn't work..., but it's such a pretty "X in the box"...:D..

Dann emailed it to me and here it is. Yes, that is the old sheath, making it most likely a Santa Monica version (est. 14-17 years old).

Thanks, Ron!.:). (It looks like I need to have one of the "computer people" from the College that I'm a Supervisor at, come over to my place sometime and show me how to work my computer...LOL!!.:p.).

Either way, it is a BEAUTIFUL knife! I love mine, I have the old SOG Bowie sheath for it.:D

Just to clarify...The SOG Trident that I have is marked; "Seki-Japan", so it looks like I have the newest model, but with an old model (rectangular nylon) sheath...However, my Trident DOES have gold-colored spacers in the handle.:).

If I read Ron's answer correctly, ALL of them were marked Seki Japan, but the earlier one said SOG (Santa Monica) or Edmonds...???

I dunno...I got the impression that only the current, later models are made in Seki-Japan...

OK Dann,
Let's play a little game of: Ask the Expert!!!

OK Ron for 3 free smileys... your question is...

Were all Tridents made in Seki Japan, and are all of them labeled as such??? Jeopardy Music...

OK then, what's your answer?

Time's up...We need your answer now.:D.

OK Guys,

Tridents have always been made in Seki, Japan. I'm a tad foggy on if the early ones said "Seki, Japan" or one of our domestic home cities (Santa Monica, CA or Edmonds, WA) was on there instead.

Sorry for the delay. I'm glad you guys are patient and in good humor! ;)

Come-on, Bobby B...Ron DID get the 1st part of the question correct, so maybe he SHOULD be awarded a :D and a :).

:D

...But then, since Ron DOESN'T seem to know the Jeopardy "music", nor does he know who Alex is, I guess he only gets a ":)".

Oh...Alex plays for the Texas Rangers (formerly for the Seattle Mariners). The "Jeopardy music" must be that organ music they play when he comes up to the plate to bat. ;)
