SOG Trident - opinions please

I'm a total knife noob.

(I don't know if this belongs here or in the Auto section, but since it's "assisted" and not exactly "auto" I thought I'd post it here. )

I'm looking into getting a small folder, possibly to EDC but mostly for occasional use and collecting dust while sitting around waiting for the end-of-the-world/hoping I never actually need it kinda stuff.

I saw a picture of a SOG Trident on another forum and thought it looked really cool. (brought me back to my Boy Scout days of lusting over nifty knives).

I really like the "groove" which allows you to cut line without opening it.

I like the tanto point, and the black TiNi finish.

You guys have any opinions on SOG knives generally or hopefully on this knife specifically?

This should probably go into the Blade Discussion forum since
this is a 'tactical' knife and not a 'traditional' knife.
sometimes the lines can blur but not in this case.

SOG are great knives...I've got a trident and a massive Tigershark. Very sharp and comfortable knives but the sheath are not very practical...Imo at least!!!

I think you did what I originally did: Assumed the "Trident" the OP was talking about was the stainless Bowie model. Not so. Apparently SOG has come up with a line of folders that bear the Trident name. Oh, and they still carry the Trident Bowie.

Ah, marketing run amok. It'll be the end of us.

Sorry.

Can somebody move it, or should I repost it over there?

:foot:

Don't re-post... a mod will move it there at some point.

Never used a SOG Trident. For the money... I would look around though.

Good luck and welcome to BF:cool:

Moved from Traditional :D.

Thanks for the heads up.

I held a trident and thought it was not worth the money. I'd look at the lower end spydercos and benchades for the same money if I were you.

Hmmmmm...

Thanks for all the replies.

Yes, I'm referring to the Trident Folder found here:

Anyone have experience with the cord cutting action? For me, that is what sets this knife apart from other folders and is something I really like about it. If it's just a gimmick and doesn't work all that great though, there may be a better choice.

I have a Trident Folder, but with the up-swept bowie type blade. The blade can be locked closed, so yes the blade will remain rigid enough to use the cord cutter.

I always liked the design, I originally tried one at a local sporting goods store and passed on it. I didn't think the knife was worth the $79.00 price tag, it was too "plastic" feeling for my liking. But a few months later I got one on sale for $57.00, at that price I felt it was worth it. I like the low-ride clip and the overall style of the knife, it doesn't feel heavy either and the assisted opening works well . If you can get one at a decent price you'd probably be happy with it.

This vendor had a bunch of different configurations.
I deal with them all the time.

I agree with Alberto. I have some older sogs (little tomcat) and they are built like tanks. I was very disappointed with the trident. Lots of blade play that I could not tighten to fix. Groove feature is neat but I dont want to give up quality. This knife is not on par with BM or spyderco.

I recently got a SOG Trident...It's not so much an edc pocket knife as a weapon! You pull out that bad boy you better want to be cutting something! A good knife to have, I think, when I'm hiking up in Sabino Canyon in Arizona...At least I'll feel like that would give me a little bit of confidence against a mountain lion (who would probably win anyway!)

If nothing else you could use it to cut your own throat and save the Lion the hassle;) :D
