If I am storing a Trident for a while (at least a couple months until I get tired of my current edc or it breaks) would it weaken the spring in the SAT to keep it closed? It seems like if there is tension on the spring in the closed position it would weaken it after a while.

I in no way shape or form know what I'm talking about. BUT anything sprung I've always been taught leave open IE a switch blade etc for long storage periods. YMMV.

Storing a SAT knife closed won't hurt anything. I store my Flash II closed all the time. It's gone a year between openings before and I've never noticed a problem. I store pistol magazines loaded for months on end with no problem also. Just grabbed my Flash II out of storage, it hasn't been played with in at least, 6 months and is still going strong.

from an engineering perspective, the behavior is called "creep." The theory is there will be some stretching of the metal due to the continued loading (i.e., keeping the spring compressed and thus under tension), plus other factors.

the battles and debates rage on the same topic over in the gun world: keeping a magazine loaded, thus keeping the magazine spring compressed.

the creep rate is also a function of time. Time in such cases can be measured in decades.

In my opinion. zero problem to keep the blade closed for a few decades.

Cheers,

Carl
