We are bying knfies for airborn law enforcement and rescue work. We are getting a really good deal on SOG Knives.

We are going to buy a folder to all the crew memeber - pilots and tactical air observers, and a fixed blade for tactical air observers - rescue work.

We are considering the new Seal pup elite as a fixed blade and the Trident or Flash 2 as a Folder.

What do you SOG "experts" think of this ?

Is there anyone out ther with good experience with this knifes?

Can you cut seat belts with the Trident "groove" ?

Thx

Lasse

Hi Lasse! I have not handled the Trident Folder, but I do have Flash II and really like it. It's fast to deploy and the locks are solid. For rescue work, I'd check out the Flash II Rescue. It was designed for search and rescue people that need to deploy a knife quickly to cut fabric and seat belts.

The new Seal Pup Elite should be avaliable from online retailers by now and looks to be an awesome knife. IMO the handle looks better then the Seal Pup which already has a nice handle. I have not had a chance to handle it yet, but I know some of our members have. Hopefully they will be around shortly to tell you more about it. :)

By the way, I'd also check out the new Gov-Tac based off the SOG Government. I have an older Government and can't wait to get my hands on the Gov-Tac. Looks like the Gov-Tac will make a great Field Utility knife. With it's stainless steel Pommel, it will be good for smashing windows to get people in or our of vehicals.

I am going to re sharpen my Trident folder, the groove really doesn't do anything for me, maybe if it was wider. I still like my Trident though.

re. fixed blade.... my own personal "like" is thick blade. And were I doing rescue work I'd want something that could serve as a prybar if need be.

-- The SOG Seal Pup Elite is "only" 0.185" per the SOG website. Seems a bit thin to me for serious prying.
-- The website doesn't say how thick the Seal Pup is..... I seem to recall 0.160" ?? a skinny little thang for a prybar.....

Also, perhaps a little more length might be useful ??
-- The SOG Tech Bowie gives you extra length and 0.240" of blade thickness.
-- The new Gov-Tac gives you extra length over the Seal Pup's, but at 0.200" thick it's not much past the Pup Elite and just seems "thin" to me.

Cheers,

Carl
