So the tanto style is another blade type that doesn't get any love on this here forum. I got an SOG Tsunami knife with a tanto point a while back, to use as a beater. Recently noticed a strange patch of what looked like cement or hardened mud in the brick corner of my front door entry. Did some research on the 'net and found out that it's a mud dauber nest. A kind of wasp that makes mud nests containing egg sacks. After considering what to use to get it out of there, I decided to use my SOG Tsunami. The big long tanto secondary edge worked perfectly to get into the corner of the masonry and pry all of that crap out. I took the nest out in a few big clumps, eggs and all. Then I used the sharp tanto point to scrape off all the mud crap from the bricks. It worked beautifully, better than a chisel, I'm sure. Real glad I had a tanto point around to use as a beater. The knife has paid for itself already.:p

Although your post was obviously tongue in cheek check out this thread for a serious discussion on tantos by tanto lovers.

Well...maybe I was a bit tongue in cheek but really I did think about it for a good long time before choosing that knife. Needed something chisel-like but still very sharp. This SOG Tsumani has a very good size for its secondary edge. I think the tanto edge is longer than anything by Cold Steel. I needed a long straight edge but at the end of a long blade, something like a razor blade on the end of a stick, to get into the corner of the masonry.

American tantos are pretty useful, in my opinion. The secondary point makes for excellent draw cuts, the tanto edge is great for scraping, and the tip is usually very pointy and well-reinforced - and then you have the primary blade for the rest of your cutting needs. If you have any belly on the primary blade, it's like having a little wharncliffe knife added on to the end of your knife.

I have heard the American tanto described as “a kiridashi on the end of a wharncliffe”
