So I ordered a Twitch II with the rosewood scale option recently and it arrived yesterday afternoon. First impressions were that it was tiny! Absolutely dwarfed by my Kershaw Talon II - which it was supposed to be replacing as the go-to edc (With the Talon discontinued I wanted to preserve the one I have - but that is another story).

The Twitch II is a real mini. This in itself I could have grown accustomed to, however the small, thin flipper and lock back really cut into my fingers.

The assisted open felt gritty and didn't successfully throw the blade into the locked position most of the time - especially without a flick of the wrist. Thumb studs were also small and sharp, and successful opening seemed almost impossible using these. My hands are not big either. Without a serious flick of the wrist, the blade would not jump out into lock.

Interestingly, the pivot seemed fine - not the problem. It was the spring system and blade moving over the lock arm that was causing the gritty feel and impeding lockup.

I will be honest and say there have been a dozen, nay a hundred products I have taken out of boxes and immediately set about customising - polishing etc to get the performance I like, so I can say I am fussy. But I can also say after holding this knife in hand for five minutes and looking over it - feeling how it worked, I couldn't be bothered even beginning to sort the issues with the Twitch, regardless of how readily I may have done so.

Love the shape, look and concept. Needs to be executed with more sturdy profiles (perhaps the Xl version is better in this respect?) and problems like raspy, mrmetallic gritty feeling in the action should be picked up by QC surely?

Anyhow, back it went, into it's crappy and damaged blister pack, and then to back to the supplier. On a happy note though, I opted to take a store credit, which I used as down payment on the Al Mar SERE 2k I have been drooling over....

My opinion of the Twitch II? Where does it fit? Too small to be able to successfully execute its interesting design, too dangerous for a kid, unfriendly to soft hands (and hard hands). Anyways, back to the Talon - stick with what you know!

Nice review but you should have given it more time. A small knife for sure but not too small IMO. Gave my dad one because he lives in DE and there's some 3" blade limit according to him. He loves it, going on 7 years now that knife is tough. Want a real test of a knife? Give it to your old man that you only see once a year or so

I agree. These knives, and at first, seem to be poorly made but if you use it for awhile and break it in and readjust the pivot, they turn out to be better than expected. *If you take one apart, do it over a white cloth towel. The sliding lock bar has a small detent ball that will escape into the atmosphere if you're not careful.:o

Maybe I was hasty. But to be fair I have never encountered a knife that looked so promising to me that failed to deliver so quickly. It just didn't gel with me. If the action was smoother and the hot points didn't bight into my skin, maybe I would have given it more of a chance. In fairness to the seller, I didn't wish to damage the product any further so I immediately bundled it back off to him.

In my line of work, I have come to realise that we can get used to just about anything - we come to accept flaws in a product as 'personality' sometimes. But the reality is that in these days of choice, there seems little point in suffering more than an quirk for even a moment more than necessary.

Also worth saying that all this is just humble opinion, unasked for. Take it as such and of course make your own decisions. :-)

The Twitch II was the knife that got me into this crazy addiction.

It was the black aluminum or titanium or whatever handle with the black coated blade. I love the knife and carried it exclusively every single day for 4 years. It fits real nice in the small change pocket on jeans so it was very easy to EDC.

I thought the AUS-8 was average, it didnt seem to hold an edge as good as, say, Ontario's AUS-8 on the RAT models. I liked the ergonomics and flipping action of the Twitch II just fine though.

Funnily enough, it was the first AO knife I ever tried in a shop, years ago - and got me hooked on the idea too. Glad to hear the design works well for some. For me, I can see that I have been spoiled by more robust knives - and without the legal limitations imposed here as they are in some places, I will be sticking to heftier units. I secretly do wish it had worked out though - I love the aesthetics of the Twitch.

Sometimes the Twitch II's need some lube and opening and closing to smooth them a bit. The XL seems to open a bit slower than a properly opening Twitch II; hence they could probably use a stronger spring. I personally think the SOG Twitch II is a nice knife and mine opened pretty fast. I gave mine away after having it for years.

I found a Twitch ii on sale a few years back for around $30 and in my opinion it was money well spent.
It took me a minute or two to adjust the pivot so that it was loose enough to fully lock up but tight enough to not have blade play, applied a drop of loc tite and it has never moved.
SOG also does a great job with aus8, I have maybe 10 knives with that steel and SOG is by far the best in terms of edge holding.

I'm sorry for your experience... My experience with my dad's twitch (plain brushed whatever material) has been that while a bit small for me, it is smooth, and flips well (the thumb studs don't work well though)
