SOG Vulcan VG10 problems

I own a SOG Vulcan - very happy with the knife overall. However, I find that the edge retention is terrrible.

I use the knife as an EDC, and it only gets very light use - some limited cutting/carving, but mainly food prep. I notice the edge has a tendency to roll ... I have not experienced the chipping problem that I've seen others mention. The knife definitely does not get abused. I did some cutting recently and the knife came into moderate contact with a ceramic plate, causing a large section of the edge to roll.

The steel seems very soft compared to other steels I own, and certainly compared to what I would expect from VG-10.

Has anybody else had experience with SOG's VG-10? Is this a problem with SOG, or did I just get a lemon, or am I just expecting too much?

I like the knife, but more and more I'm starting to see SOG as a "looks over substance" manufacturer, especially compared to my Benchmade and Spyderco knives.

Well it depends on the edge that's on the Vulcan. If it it very acute that means it will be damaged easily. In that case, add a microbevel.
You should never let the edge of ANY knife with ANY steel contact ANYTHING harder than steel, you will not end up with a knife as sharp as it was before contact.

I had the edge on a SOG Flash II roll as well, after a little bit of cutting down small saplings. I'm thinking also that it was the acute edge angle, though I have not yet tried increasing the angle. But I bet that would do the trick. And yeah, SOG should do better. I still like their knives, and I have rolled a Spyderco edge too, but maybe they need to throw a more robust angle on the blade.

Stick with it. Maybe give it a more robust edge angle and keep on truckin'. Good luck.

A ceramic plate will kill any edge instantly. Some cutting boards are very hard on an edge as well. Glass of course. Also acrylic.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I appreciate the perspectives.
The edge angle doe look pretty acute, not a lot of material supporting the edge.

I had my edge reprofiled, I didn't like the factory edge. I haven't had any problems.
