Hey knuts

I know that the Vulcan isn't due out yet but has anyone seen it?

Hows the grind?
it looks like a hollow grind or something

it looks like what I need for edc.

any info would be appreciated

thanks guys

Interesting. The marketing seems to be focused on a specific target market... first few sentences in the link speak nothing of the knife:

The General Electric M61A1 Vulcan is a 6-barrel 20mm cannon of the gatling-type. It fires standard M50 ammunition at 6,000 rounds per minute and is integral part of the armament of modern fighters such as the F-15, F-18 and of course the F-16

Is the lock a new design or standard fare for Sog locks? Obviously I know nothing about it.

That's foreplay, just to get you hot for the knife. :D

The lock is the standard SOG Arc lock:

... the F-16. Our Vulcan is also formidable with a powerful strength of construction. There is nothing weak about the Vulcan. Take for instance our patented Arc-Lock™.

Well yeah, believe it or not I managed to avoid slipping into a mail ninja fantasy after reading the first two sentences long enough to read it was their trademarked arc lock. I just don't know anything about that lock, was to lazy to sift through whatever might be available to a "search", and knew you were in the area and would likely respond. Since you dispense honest, balanced, and fair knife opinions you are better than the search button. I guess I just got white screened in that hope though. :D

That looks like a nice knife if the street price is reasonable. By the way, does SOG's scrolling thumbnail gallery thing drive anyone else nuts or is it just me?

It got to me at first until I figured out how to make it stand still. :D

Under the Products, Folding Knives listing is .. ta daa .. Arc-lock.

Thanks Esav, I saw that. It is rife with unquantified claims. Other than being ambidextrous...those claims have no meaning. "Setting the standard in tactical engineering." is a cute but meaningless phrase.

So. On the face it looks like it it is related to the Spyderco Ball lock or the Benchmade Axis. Both of those locks look similar on the face but actually work quite differently mechanically. However both are quite dependable. Does the Arc-lock stand up on the same level in terms of dependability?
Mechanically is it more like the Axis or more like the Ball lock...or something else?

Thanks if anyone chimes in. :)

I played with the vulcan at the Blade show, and the grind is a sort of hollow grind, and the blade is .16 thick and stays thick pretty far out to the tip. The blade shape and design is really nice. VG-10 steel too so it should cut well.

Handle is standard SOG fare "Zytel" which feels like plastic to me, but its still strong and has full stainless liners and overall feels really sturdy and well made. The grip is nice with the finger grooves and contours as well.

The lock is the standard SOG arc-lock which according to the 2007 SOG catalog "far surpasses conventional lock strength, tested at over 1000 lbs of force measured at the lock in an independent lab test." *this is the only somewhat substantiated claim SOG gives for its arc-lock, which is similar to the way benchmade talks about its axis* Its a very similar mechanism to the axis lock *moreso than the ball-lock* and works on the same principle, the main difference being that the arc lock moves in an arc shape since the lock bar is attached to a pivot above the lock *you can see a silver dot above the lock bar , this is the pivot pin. There is a small bar attached form there to the lock bar.* , but I believe is still sprung by similar omega springs like the axis lock. I played with several with the lock and it felt very solid and quick opening and closing. If I got a SOG I'd want one with this lock. *I've read on here that a few (maybe only one) people have had a problem with the arc lock "exploding" upon first open (not during use), but I don't see how this is possible because as far as I could tell the lock bar/pivot etc was one piece. And I'm sure SOG would rectify the problem even if such a thing did happen.*

Speaking of the opening action, the little kicker that sticks out the back works like a charm and is very handy, and is the perfect size...doesn't get in the way, but isn't stupid tiny like the one on the Kershaw Storm II where you can barely use it.

Overall, I like this knife a lot, and if you want a plain edge, I think this one will be a winner. I believe they are expecting them in stores in late July. Crocblades.com is pre-ordering at $95.00. After the initial wow factor wears off maybe we will be able to snag one at ~$75 street.

Two threads to watch for info on it:

as always, YMMV

edit: I was typing/researching during the last two posts. New info added to address questions.

I looked at one at the SOG booth at the Atlanta Blade Show. Not sure where Spencer pulled it out from as I wasn't watching that closely. He was showing me quite a few of their blades and his enthusiasm is infectious. The Vulcan is the NEXT SOG that I buy. You will like it. It feels a lot like the Tomcat III. I have their 2007 catalog which shows a real nice picture of it.

As an aside, Spencer mentioned that they are going to move the Revolver model into their Fusion line. He believes it is a little too expensive for the market. So, any of you who might be entertaining the purchase of one of the revolver models might what to consider buying soon.

Length: 8.375"; Blade: 3.5" x 0.160 VG10 Stainless Rc 57-58; Finish: Satin Polish; Straight edge; 5.0 oz; zytel with steel liners; reversable clip. Retail is $150. So the price above sounds about right.

Another nice blade is the new Spec Elite I (4" blade) & II (5" blade) which is a plain edge, AUS 8 stainless. It is modeled after the Pentagon Elite. It looks like a real fighting knife. Nice!

Yeah, he had it hiding...I couldn't remember the name of the dang thing and when he finally figured out what I was talking about he rummaged through some boxes that were behind him for a minute and found it.

He also gave me a quarter to cut through with the Powerlock. Cut successfully. Sale successful.:D

Anyone know if the Arc lock is similar (or exactly) like Benchmade's Axis lock?
It is similar with a few key differences. I have taken both apart...:D It's been around for about 4 years now (give or take) and there were some threads on the SOG forum about the differences/similarities.
I like the Tomcat 3.0 but will also take a look at the Vulcan... marketing hyperbole aside...
