Hey everyone. I was checking out the "Best Using SOG" thread and saw a couple of votes for the Recon Bowie. I wanted to know which would be better for an all around working knife - SOG Bowie or Recon Bowie.

Personally I prefer the Recon Bowie. I handled all of the SOG knives and it was just my favorite. When I was choosing my 24/7 knife, it was between the Recon and the Commemorative. I love the bluing on the blades. Coatings don't really do it for me. I also really liked the SK-5 steel as apposed to the AUS8. Some people don't care about that, but I do. Both are great, but the Sk-5 is better in my opinion. In the end, some of the things that made me choose the Recon over the Commemorative were:

Slightly longer blade and longer overall on the Recon.

I don't need a sheath with a sharpening stone. I use my own stones and they won't fit in that pouch.

The Recon doesn't have near as much of that "military/survival" look as the Commemorative.

I liked the true oval handle over the one with the slight finger grooves.

Seemed a little better balanced to me than the Commemorative. Again this is something that doesn't necessarily matter to most people, but it does to me.

Most of these things also apply concerning the other Bowie models as well like the 2.0 and Super. I'm actually very interested in hearing everyone else's opinion on this.

RECON!

When you absolutely have to kill every m*therf*cker in the room? SOG Recon Bowie. Except no substitute.

Knife 13,

I'll assume you're talking about SOG's S1 model Bowie.....

A big advantage in favor of the S1 Bowie is that the blade is thicker than the Recon Bowie. Thus, the S1 Bowie is a more expensive pry bar, and the extra thickness provides a bit more confidence when prying, compared to the Recon Bowie.

Dylside says it best, "... Sk-5 is better in my opinion." I couldn't agree more, SK-5 is my favorite steel.

Cheers,

Carl

p.s. the only way out of the "selection dilemma" is to buy at least one of each.....
