Title says it all. I'm looking for a new smallish fixed blade knife, and I am curious about the BG-42 and the Recondo. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think that you will probably have more responses if you have a moderator move this to either the General forum or the Knife Reviews and Testing forum.

jefroman,

I'll move it to the Reviews & Testing forum -- you can find some info already posted there with a search, too, and there's a SOG forum in the Manufacturers section.

I like the knife, much lighter than I was expecting. Held an edge well under medium use in wooded areas (thats all the time I had to play with it). Don't regret buying it. If I can find who I traded it too, he might have some more insight and experience to offer for you.

About 3 or 4 months ago. It actually caused quite a stir. I think if you did a search in this forum you would probably find the review and
the ensuing thread. If I remember correctly, Cliff's approximate
conclusion was that the BG42 steel acted about as he suspected, the
knife did not fit the purposes that he had for a knife and that the
actual edge grind had too large an angle for his tastes. Personally,
I've never really looked into one, but from the scanning I have done
it is one of the least expensive knives you can buy in that size
range with BG42 steel. I do have other SOG products and like them
pretty well, so I would examine the criteria Cliff had before making
a judgement.

For smallish fixed blades, the Marble's line gets very high praise. However, there are no stainless Marble's knives, if stainless is what you want.

If you are looking for a smallish fixed blade with tactical potential, there is the new Blackjack Trailguide III. It is a carbon steel knife with strong Randall influence, including an excellent double guard (unlike most smaller factory tacticals).

Yes, in general, the interpretation of the work should be done by the reader, my conclusion is really only relevant to me.

As for knives of that class in general, the Fallkniven line jumps out to me as a direct improvement, the S1 specifically for that class of blade.

In regards to "high end" steels, care needs to be taken when using such labels are it only applies if the properties of the material are optomized by the blades design, this is not the case for the Recondo and BG-42. Check out the Sebenza for how BG-42 should be used in a knife.
