Hey everyone,

Just wanted to stop by the old stomping grounds and remember Dick. It'll be 3 years Tuesday, and I know I'll be so busy at work I might have forgotten.

Dick was a valued member of this forum for some time, and a generous one to boot. I know Steve can attest that Dick donated a substantial number of knives to raffle off for Ram's medical studies. We visited on the phone several times, and his knowledge about knives was amazing. He had a substantial collection, not just HI, and turned me onto several new lines.

A bunch of you have one or even more of Dick's knives, that he gave to me when he knew the end was near, and asked that they be passed on to members of the HI forum from time to time. I hope you treasure them. Dick loved HI and wanted to see it thrive.

A gentle reminder, my first since he walked west: If you made a commitment to Best Friends in memory of Dick, I hope that you will honor it if you have not already done so. Just $25 will get you the magazine, and you can also post a memorial thought for Dick if you like, for free.

Dick's ashes were scattered up at Angel's Rest in Utah, where his beloved animals also rest. He donated all his vehicles and other stuff to a Veteran's Organization I believe.

Here's a pic of Dick we publish every year, outside his Idaho home.

RIP Dick.

N.

P.S. from Dick:

I have a few things he sent me.

Can we remember Brian too?

Great gentleman, we missed both

I did not have the pleasure of meeting either of these gentleman but I cherish the two Khuk's I own from the collection of the late Brian Katz.

I intend to donate his Uncle Bill Memorial Salyan back to the HI community when I get put into assisted care/nursing home, I only wish there was a museum or a member who would volunteer to house those special and unique HI products.

I came too late to make the acquaintance of either Dick or Brian. From these postings, they were men of knowledge and generosity whose influence has continued to be felt by the forum and members that knew them. I also assume that they were men of great heart. I keep getting that feeling from this forum. Since I've been reading forum posts from the archives forward, I can look forward to "meeting" both Dick and Brian soon. Thank you for what you've left.

Svashtar mentioned that Dick supplied items for the purpose of Ram's education. If anyone could supply me with a timeline or a link I would appreciate it. I recently acquired a khukuri that was auctioned for this purpose and, while I want to know more about both the khukuri and the raising of funds, I don't know where to start. Thanks in advance.

God Bless you Dick Singer and Brian Katz.

Dick was constantly supporting, encouraging, and buying my meager work before he died. He was actually the first person to offer me $ for my work (sheaths at the time). He was a good friend. His request was to have his name spoken into the wind. I do this almost daily in the shop.

Brian Katz was another one who was constantly supporting me at the beginning of my knife journey. Brian was full of knowledge, and constantly gave advice.

God bless them.

thanx for all the fish guys

Love and Light.
Bri is why I attempted to put my Kentuck .50 kit together last year. Still staining it:)

Just was mentioning Soguy on another forum recently!

There's got to be a hell of a great knife collectors forum in Heaven:thumbup:;)

There were several auctions that Steve Ferguson drove start to finish for Ram's education. I was going to suggest you look up Steve's posts (search for Ram) but also remember there was some foolishness at one time about Steve not being allowed to mention some things on BF about the auctions. (?)

The details escape me, but Dick did donate several items to at least 1 or 2 of the auctions. On one auction in late '05 or early '06 I remember Steve mentioning a "very generous forumite" and I'm sure that must have been Dick. (I'm guessing it was Spring or Summer '06.)

However Steve also donated more than just his time, he also donated $ and a whole bunch of great blades over the years, all of which he cleaned up, refinished the handles, sharpened the blades, etc.

And I remember Sarge made a whole bunch of wonderful knives and donated them. I got an incredible Ballock dagger he made, along with a little puukko. Later Aardvark made me a present of a bone handled Sarge hunting knife that was also made for the Raffle, which is the single sharpest knife I own (and I have a few.) :) And I know Andy also donated several knives he had made in early 2007. I'm sure I'm forgetting more people, but the rest of us just donated cash, which was easy.

Do a search anyway, but my email folders show auctions both large and small in Sept. 2004, Mar. 2005, July 2005, Dec. 2005, May 2006, Aug. 2006, Dec. 2006, Feb. 2007 (Andy), Mar. 2007, Nov. 2007, Mar. 2008, Oct. 2008, and Mar. 2009. Ram graduated in June 2009.

Steve drove all of this, which means that on the cosmic karmic scale we'll all be reporting to him in the next life as his personal servants. (I get dibs on chauffeur!) ;)

He took pics of everything and posted it to Photobucket so might be able to ID your blade and when it sold, but he moved a lot of steel over the years so I wouldn't count on it.

Best,

Norm

Thanks for the information Svashtar. Oddly enough I also got an email last night on the same subject with information that auctions were held elsewhere. And like you said-(?). That many auctions huh? At least it gives me a place to start. Maybe I could track down Steve's photobucket too.

Steve's photo/avatar shows a friendly guy and from your info, he's also generous. But it appears that many of you on this forum are generous and friendly, too. I think you're right on that karmic thing, though. And, OK, you can drive as long as you know where to stop for chang.
