Recently I've been trying to figure out what knives I use most on campouts and hikes. When it comes to general use knives (I'll refer to them as camp or field knives from now on) I've learned that I prefer a 4" to 6" blade. 7" will work, but 4-6" is my thing.

The other day Mystwalker posted a cool thread in the Becker forum entitled A Quick Four-Pronged Gig. In it, he used a new Leather handled Kabar to do the work. This reminded me how much I want to get another Shorty Kabar (5" Blade). So a friend and I have been talking about this. Then I remembered how much I like the SOG Field Pup. Next thing you know I was checking out all the knives on SOG's website with 4-6" blades and was amazed at how many they had. Below is a list of just the ones I want:

Daggert 1; 5.65"
Daggert 2; 6.6"
Field Pup; 4"
Gov-Tac; 6.1"
NW Ranger (S240); 5.2"
Revolver Hunter; 4.75"
Seal Pup; 4.75"
Seal Pop Elite - Straight Edge; 4.85"
Woodland Large; 4.8"
Woodland Small; 4"
Vulcan Fixed Blade; 5.3"

One of these:
SOG Bowie 2.0; 6.4"
Tech Bowie; 6.4"
Trident 2.0; 6.4"

Left the Tsunami and Pentagons off the list because I have the older versions so I need to get other knives before I get the new versions. ;)

Wow, after typing up my list I see that there are 12 SOG knives I'm interested in just in the 4-6" range. Before class this morning I almost bought a Field Pup, but desided eating was better. Making this list has calmed my erge to shop a little bit.

So what Medium SOG knives do you like and what do you use them for? I'll post some stuff about my current knives in a bit.

ive got a field pup, seal pup,and a nw ranger 2.0.i use them mostly for hunting and dayhiking.

Which ones have you used to process your kills with? Got pics or stories? How do you like the NW Ranger 2.0?

I used my seal pup for years as a camp knife. I used it once to clean a squirrel once but that is teh only hunting type chores I did. It will do most every small to medium tasks. I would love to get a NW ranger.

One of my favorite knives, which isn't on your list, is the Team Leader TL-01 in Duratech 20CV. I would like to get a NW Ranger, as I really like 5" blades. I used the Team Leader to clean this nice boar I shot in the summer. Stayed sharp, split bone like butter, but the blade shape was a little wide for the finer details. Did a decent skinning job. I really like the steel. Too bad they're discontinued. The flat grind makes for a great slicer, too. Simple design, but very functional.

Nice picture, Planetcat! Where about is that up in Nor Cal? I'm from the East Bay and that looks a lot like the hills around where I live.

As for the Team Leader, they discontinued it?! That's always been one I've wanted, but never got around to buying!

Northern Sonoma county, just north of Cloverdale. Coastal wine country. Great for wine and hog hunting.

I have a Seki NW Ranger inbound. Bought from a fellow inmate here. If I like it I might order a new 2.0 without the serrations.

The Tech Bowie might fit your criteria also.

OK, what 6" or less SOG do I like, that I have in my collection .....

the SOG Bowie (S1) is at the tip-top top of my list, an awesome knife and the very first SOG I bought:

then the Tech I: a spectacular knife. The sorta-squishy Kraton is perhaps the best handle material SOG ever used.

then the SOG X-42 Field Knife: I still have a heck of a time putting lotsa sharp on this knife, the steel is so incredibly hard. But once there, wow.

the X-42 Recondo is pretty cool, and the same problem getting any sort of decent sharp on it:

aww cute, my wife wants to know his/her name.

I have found defining length of a blade includes for consideration of serrations. 4 inches is excellent without serrations, mediocre with. However a longer blade with serrations is not always a solution. Just personal preference.
