Does any body know off hand the quality differances between the Seki Japan metal and the Tiawan metal? Im not to schooled on the whole topic but was led to believ that SOG now has all there metal coming from Tiawan? But I had thought I had still seen some Seki metal blades.
Any info would help.

We do have some knives coming from Taiwan and continue to produce knives in Seki. I do not know where you heard all of our steel was coming from Taiwan but that is incorrect.

From my personal experience there is very little, if any difference, between the Seki steels and Taiwan steels. If you were to take two identical knives using the same steel one from Taiwan and one from Seki, I would wager that you would be very hard pressed to find any performance differences. I have taken a couple of our Taiwan knives out camping and been very pleased with the performance and actually used one, the Field Pup, several times in a row with out having to sharpen it. I was slightly shocked at how well it held an edge after some abuse on my end.

The biggest difference between Seki knives and Taiwan knives comes at the register.

Hope this helps
Chris

Thanks Chris, this was just something that caught my ear in passing. Not sure where, but since I am not an expert in metallurgy I figured I would ask around. Seems you have answered my question very well.

I personally have no issues with blades made in Taiwan. I would however have a problem if it meant lower standards of quality from SOG.
In the past I have had problems with certain brands, knife and non-knife related, that have changed their proccess to a cheaper standard, and since then, my curiousity always gets peaked when I become aware of this happening with other brands which I am loyal to.

I need to learn sometimes change is not always a bad thing. But I am always expecting the worse as this seems to be the trend in companys trying to cut overhead. Seems quality always takes the first cut.

Thanks, Phil (Bobafett..whatever)

Of the two SOG's I have my SOG Tech Bowie is made in Tawain while the Pentagon Elite II is manufactured in Seki, Japan. That's as far as I know.

True, there should be no material differences between a specified steel no matter its point of origin. The question should be one concerning the standard of workmanship and general trustworthiness of an OEM. The cultural differences between these two distinct peoples, gives rise to different standards placed on work ethics. I leave it to your individual judgement through history, which country throughly deserves your business.

Just for interests sake, what models are still made in Seki City?

Quick list and by no means complete.

Seki
SOG Bowie Commemorative
Recon Bowie
SCUBA/Demo
SEAL Pup
SEAL Knife
Tigershark
Pentagon
Mini Pentagon
NW Ranger
Vision series
Pentagon Elite/Spec Elite
Tomcat 3.0
Arcitech

Taiwan
Daggerts
Gov-Tac
Trident 2.0
SOG Bowie 2.0
Super SOG Bowie
SEAL Pup Elite

I am sure I missed some. Our tools and most of our folders are US made.

So I guess most of the newer fixed blades in AUS8 are made in Taiwan; the older blades in AUS6/High end blades are still made in Seki City and folders/multi tool in the U.S. My guess for the Fusion line is Taiwan?

By the way, thanks, Chris! Your reply and presence here is greatly appreciated!
