Yesterday, I received a SOG Sogwinder II in a trade, and this is one excellent STOUT folder! As I'm looking at it, I'm trying to figure-out why SOG DC'd this one...

IIRC the SOGWinderII was discontinued do to slow sales. But I could be wrong. If you like Large Beefy folders, check out the Tomcat II.:)

They are pretty much the same knife, but with a different blade-style. I have owned a couple of the older Tomcats (with the nail-nick), and they are ALL rather impressive, stout folders.

There's only one major reason SOG discontinues any knife ... Low sales. That's the unfortunate case with the classic SW2 (one tank-of-a-knife).

The Tomcat and SOGwinder models were top notch tactical folders of their time.
But its my guess that eventually in time since its release, that both the retail price and the expectations of the younger and newer set of cosumers signaled its sad end.
But anyone who KNOWS what quality is, would simply have to agree that the fit and finish those folders were simply a tough act to follow. Especially since they were hand ground by those highly skilled Seki craftsman.
Time will prove that the collector value of these models as they become scarce, much like Bobby B's gun blued folder.

My guess is the similarities between the Tomcat and the Sog Winder II, and SOG's ability to meet customer demand with one model instead of just two, given the Tomcat's update to thumbstuds, from nail nicks. I had a Sog Winder II for many years, and recently got a brand new one from the factory, because the uneveness in the handle/lock was a "defect".

This was very much part of the equation. Kinda a merging of the knives...keeping just one remaining in production...the Tomcat II.

by the way.. don't get me wrong about my original Sog Winder II. I had it for probably 10 years, and had no issues with it, even when I became aware, that there was something that might have been a "defect". I called SOG to have it checked out, and was ecstatic to get a brand new one, even after 10 years of ownership. What great service!!
