Hey, any of you guys use pv-powered gadgets of any type? I just got a neat little universal charger, made by a company called Solio, that has a few pv cells to charge its internal battery, which you can then use to juice up your phone, gps, etc. I use mine primarily on road/camping trips (especially because the lighter in my truck doesn't work and I haven't felt like fixing it).

Any other similar ideas out there?

I picked up a couple of Brunton folding solar cells a while back when they were on cell for 60% off at REI outlet. I got them was to put one in my car kit and possibly one in my bug out bag but haven't used them for a whole lot other then testing them out. So far I have charged a couple of batteries and run a small radio and light.

Thanks for posting that. I was hoping more had some knowledge on the subject.

I bought a Swiss Solar Light a few years ago. It's about the size of a dog tag, with 1 5mm LED sticking out of it. So far, it's worked fine. Puts out enough light to be useful. Small enough so that when I go backpacking I use it as one of my zipper pulls.

Oh, I got a Casio Tough Solar Watch, too. No issues with it so far; I think I've had it at least 2 years. Don't wear it everyday, though.

I'm a retired senior and don't use my motor vehicles all that much, maybe 200 miles a year for my primary vehicle. Since it's a later model Mercury and has the computer and other electronic gadgets, the battery can go dead after two to three weeks of non use. Couple of years back I bought one of those $29.95 1.8 watt solar cells with a cigarette lighter male plug cabled from it. Mounted the solar cell atop the dash with two way tape, plugged the lighter thingie into the lighter socket, and no more problems. Works great, the battery stays charged and the car fires up immediately even after a month or more parked. BTW, recently noticed these same units for sale by Northern Tool for $19.95...

Car battery saver...little panel that sit in your windshield with a cigarette lighter plug that you use if you know you won't start your car for a while. Keeps your battery from draining.
