I cleaned house pretty recently. I sold all of the knives I wasn't carrying or using, and now I'm down to:
Left hand carry:
- Black Tenacious
- Kershaw RAM
- Endura Wave
Right hand carry:
- Gayle Bradley
My Gayle Bradley kicked my Southard and a bunch of other knives out of the rotation, because I've found it fills a lot of niches at once - high wear resistance, high impact resistance, perfect lockup, easy one-hand operation, sturdy, carries well, looks good.
It needs friends, though. I've been looking at Hogue knives (especially the wharncliffe EX-04...!), and I'm definitely getting the Sandvik CRKT Swindle when it comes out, but I'm having a hard time finding anything else that suits my needs. I'm kinda picky, in that I don't like serrations, chisel/zero grinds, axis locks, assisted openers, AUS8, S30V, or Emersons. All of my knives also need to have a pocket clip, weigh less than 6oz, have a blade 3" or longer, and have absolutely no blade play.
Solid, easily-carried, reasonably-easy-to-sharpen, plain-edge manual utility knives with "good" steel. You can see why the Gayle Bradley stole the show. I used to carry an 0561, but it was such a brick in my pocket that it was just uncomfortable to carry (my right-hand carry is in the same pocket as my wallet and phone).
My budget on this is pretty sizable after selling most of my knives, but that doesn't mean cheaper knives are to be ignored. I mean, I still carry my Tenacious pretty regularly, and my RAM didn't cost a whole lot more...
Anyway, I bow to the superior knowledge, experience, and suggestions of the other members here
