soldering guard to damascus blade??

I read that soldering the guard to the blade adds a professional look to it, but what if it's a damascus blade? wouldnt the soldering and sanding ruin the finish on the blade? Would you recommend to not solder, just to make sure it is a nice tight fit?
Thanks,
Jake

I'm a newbie but did exactly what your are considering today. I soldered a guard on a hidden tang damascus blade using soft solder. Heated everything with a propane torch, got good capillary action and cleaned up the front "show" face with a piece of brass rod I had sharpened to a "chisel" edge. I had to resharpen my brass chisel frequently. I completed cleaning with a piece of 600 wrapped around a file. Looks good

Jake, I've been soldering my guards on Damascus blades for quite a few years without any problems. I've found it best for me to do things in a certian order so as to not mess up the finish on the blade. I think a couple pictures would be worth a lot of words here. Hope this helps. Ron

Beautiful knife, Mr.Duncan! Like your website too - you make some really nice blades:thumbup:

Thanks everyone for the nice comments about my knives.

Bruce, Soldering guards on Damascus blades isn't any harder that soldering them to any other steel. Just do your soldering and cleanup before you etch the blade in F.C. Ron

I have always soldered my guards on Damascus blades also.I solder the guard on the blade then etch blade and guard at the same time, then attach the handle and finish the guard and handle at the same time after the etch.hope that makes sense.
Great looking Knife Mr.Duncan...

Bruce

thanks for the responses.
I guess it's not a big deal if you etch the blade afterwards, and wouldn't work so well if you do so after the etching process.
I appreciate the replies.
Jake

P.S. Beautiful knives you got there R. Duncan
