Soldering method that works for me

Reading the forums over the past year I noticed several people were struggling with silver soldering. Though I've had previous soldering experience, I count myself among the frustrated. This method just kind of evolved for me - out of necessity. It developed out of a combination of experimenting and tips from the Bladeforums. What I like about it is that it is fast, predicatable and does not mess up that blade you have spent so much time getting cleaned up.

Rather than post a bunch of pics, I pit the whole thing on a page that you can take a look at:

Thanks to fellow forumites for helping a rookie along on this.

Cool tutorial, I whish I'd seen something like this when I first started. My solder joints were so bad that I started to go to a completely solderless gaurd just because of trying to clean up the joint.

Here's a tip Bruce Evans showed me that has made my like a little easier, just after soldering while everythings still good and hot, give the solder joint a quik spray with Windex. Not too much, just a shot or two, you don't realy want to cool the joint, the steam from the Windex blows the flux and other crud off the joint and helps neutralize the acide of the flux.

One other thing I've learned trying to solder is to boil the blade and gaurd in a pan of water and bakeing soda for 15-20 minits to nutralize any traped flux. This keep corosion from showing up a week or month from the time you finish the knife. Got that idea from someone on the forums, cant' remember who, sory.

Great looking tutorial. Thanks for putting it together. I will down load it if you don't mind.

It obviously works well. I have not been very sucsseeful in the past
I have only done a couple.

The only thing is a mate of mine did it like you once to show me but he only used a couple of small pieces of solder about 1/3 as long as yours. The heat made it run anong the crack and all the way around.
It left less for clean up. (He was a guild member, the closet person to a god that I know)

You may like to try it. Feel free to call me a couple of dozen names if it does not work.

Reg & Will - I,m going to try those tips. This tutorial is really a compilation of other folks tips, so those will be next on the agenda. Anything beats feeding the solder in while heating.

Hey Bob nice
I took the liberty and I put up it on the knife making page
with your web site addy.
if you don't want it on there just let me know I'm sure you don't mind. also if you don't mind will you put a reciprocal link on that page or you main page. this will help with the placements on the engines I'm going to ask the others on the page to do the same. it will help with their listing On the web also . let me know if you don't plan on leaving it on the web, I can store it on my puter if you don't
Thanks nice work Bob:D

Hey Dan, Thanks. Since I mounted this on my server,I might as well do a tutorials link on my main page. I'll also do a links page. It'll take some time, though..demands of the day job, etc, etc.

Good hearing from you.

Bob, i like your tutorial,I think that all of us
have trouble soldering sometimes. Have you trued the
blue knife edge flex grind/polishing disk on a dermal
or fordem, thy are the the cats pajamas on this kind
of clean up as you may be able to avoid the buffer
completely. Thy are a rubber disk with abrasive in it
made to both cut and polish at the same time. You get
them from Rio Grande 1 800 545 6566

Good tip, Gib. I just got a bunch of small wheels & buffs in from MSC today. I put a pic of those and a pic of the gravers on the page - I also put up your suggestion and everyone else's.. we learn from each other, so....

That's good Bob. I've been painting unwanted areas with anti-flux. It really helps a lot. There is still some cleanup of excess solder though.

Roger

painting unwanted areas with anti-flux .good point Roger

I use OMC Marine (P# 771298) fogging oil on the rest of the blade,
the steam from the flux carrying it on a lot of the blade
after soldering,,
some good ideas here.
bob this will make for a great little tutorial
on soldering. :)
