This photographer put together a collection of a soldiers gear, ranging from 1066 to modern day, it's pretty cool to look at how much has changed and what has stayed the same.

I found looking at the knives and their evolution in this fascinating. Most of them have a smaller utility/patch/eating knife, in addition to their sword/dagger/bayonet, with the first folder making an appearance in 1815 (it's a neat looking traditional folder).

Enjoy

Awesome...thanks for the link.
Can't wait to spend some time reading this later on...now it's time for a bike ride then mowing the lawn while the day is nice.

Glocker- yea buddy, trench warfare was a real motherf'er... shotguns were considered cruel weapons by Germany. The U.S. troops used them to clear trenches while the Germans used gas to poison the French, British and Yanks; a lot of hand to hand combat.

I didn't know that soldiers carried maces in WWI.

Yeah, trench warfare involved a lot of brutal close in fighting. Maces and improvised clubs, a big variety of knives(including the famous "trench knife" of course) and bayonets, entrenching tools and spades...

Wow cool set of photos. I was amazed at how many of the battles I was unfamiliar with.
It brought back childhood memories of the Old School GI Joe dolls that had whole different sets of clothing and gear. I liked the WWII Aussie and the WWII !0th Mountain set ups.

Interesting how the spoon is the most common item. You see the folding knife pop up in 1815 and the last set of gear appears the Leatherman.

In WWI it was common the sharpen your entrenching tool to make a trench fighting weapon.

Thanks for posting.
