A friend walked in yesterday asking if I could do up some knifes that he has found over the years. They had been @#$@#%$#$% abused by people that had 'found them' and then genuinly lost for this guy to pick them up.

The Puma has been easy. Having been sharpened on concrete a belt sander made it quick and easy, finished with a steel. A very small sheath knife.

The second is a 10 inch blade stamped 'Original Bowie'. When I was told about it a week back I was very sceptical. What came in looked promising. It is made in Solingen by Hubertus stag handles. I just am unable to read the website since my German is non existent. Unfortunately it was used to chop bricks and the edge needs regrinding and it was found on the side of the Okavango swamp so it was slightly rusted, easy to polish out. I am keen to do it up but don't know if it is valuable shouldn't it be sent to factory.

Any Ideas?

Tim

Hi Tim

Solingen is a German City with a rich cutlery tradition. Hubertus is a manufacturer who's well known for, among other types, automatic knives. Generally speaking, german knives, if marked rostfrei (not rastafrei) which means "rust-free", usually means that the knife is made of a 440 stainless steel. Barring heat damage, or atrocious abuse, the knife should fix up well.
