Hi. I recently purchased a Solingen knife and the seller told me it was from the World War II era. I put it up for sale on eBay recently and someone said that it is just a steak knife. Would someone e-mail me (LSlone777@aol.com) so I can show you a picture of it? I just would like to know what it is? Thank you for your time. It's appreciated!

I think this is a "Nicker" - a German hunting knife, at least it is shaped like one.

You might want to ask Bernard Levine. He's probably the best expert around in regards to knife history.

It's a Nicker, sometimes sold as a Leaderhosen(sp?) knife. These are sold on Ebay all the time as a Trench, boot, etc... knife.

If you can supply a maker's mark, it would help to narrow down the age a bit:).

Please tell me where to look for that "maker's mark." Besides the word "Solingen" on the blade (sharp side down, about half way across), that's the only wording that I can find on the whole knife.

O.K., the knife probably was just marked with the product's origin, that's not unusual:).

What you've got is a traditional German hunting/utility knife, and certainly not a steak knife. I can't really help with the age(the pattern's been around for a long time), but the WWII time-frame is cosistant.

I really appreciate the feedback coming in on this knife. I have a couple of more questions for you. Would this knife have a bone handle? Also, would a starting bidding price on eBay of $12.99 be in line?

Hi,

The handle actually looks to be Stag antler:). Yes, your starting price would be in line, most of these I've seen went in the $20-50 range, depending on who was looking.

Are you serious when you say it might have a stag antler handle? If you are, I will change that in my description on eBay. Also, I was curious about the $12.99 minimum bid price that I have on it right now -- it has not received any bids at all and the auction will be up very soon. But, it does have a crack in the handle too.

Yep, I'm serious, sometimes it can look a bit like bone, depending on the cut of stag the maker uses, etc.... The crack does effect value, if it does'nt go, I'd may be try it as part of a lot, if you have other sporting stuff around.

:D:).
