Here is a little food for thought...

General "Black Jack" Pershing was born September 13th, 1860 near
Laclede, MS. he died July 15th, 1948 in Washington, D.C.

Highlights of his life include:

1891 Professor of Military Science and Tactics University of Nebraska
1898 Serves in the Spanish-American War
1901 Awarded rank of Captain
1906 Promoted to rank of Brigadier General
1909 Military Governor of Moro Province, Philippines
1916 Made Major General
1919 Promoted to General of the Armies
1921 Appointed Chief of Staff
1924 Retires from active duty Education West Point.

Just before World War I, there were a number of terrorist attacks on the United States forces in the Philippines by Muslim extremists. So General Pershing captured 50 terrorists and had them tied to posts for execution.

He then had his men bring in two pigs and slaughter them in front of the, now horrified, terrorists.

Muslims detest pork because they believe pigs are filthy animals. Some of them simply refuse to eat it, while others won't even touch pigs at all, nor any of their by-products. To them, eating or touching a pig, its meat, its blood, etc., is to be instantly barred from paradise (and those virgins) and doomed to hell.

The soldiers then soaked their bullets in the pigs blood, and proceeded to execute 49 of the terrorists by firing squad. The soldiers then dug a big hole, dumped in the terrorist's bodies and covered them in pig blood, entrails, etc.

They let the 50th man go. And for the next forty-two years, there was not a single Muslim extremist attack anywhere in the world.

But, it sure seems like a awful waist of good pork.

I agree Pappy.

Unfortunately, it seems that there are always some folks that are impressed by nothing less than an extravagant expendiature of resources, be it pork, money, horsepower, or human life. At times it is a sad world to live in. All we can do is our best to try and make sure nothing is wasted to no purpose.

A lot of crticism about the War in Iraq has revolved around the idea that 'it will make them mad" (muslim terrorists all over) By that philosophy, one would never defend themselve and the world would plunge into anarchy.

Dipping bullets in pigs blood though will 'really make them mad" and isnt anything I want to see our soldiers or government doing.

I have a simple philosophy; when you have incontrovertable proof of a murderer's guilt, and the crime is grievious and warrants the death penalty, he should be shot once in the head at close range and disposed of quickly. No muss, no fuss, no Nightly News fiasco, no protestors, no Carnival; just shot. On a concrete floor, with an overhead shower.

Where'd you get that story? Up until the 60s when many Moros had the opportunity to go to the Middle East for education, you could still find many Moros who ate pig, or drank alcohol. One of the big complaints by Middle Eastern Missionaries in the 60s was that Filipino Muslims werent religious enough (at least by thier standards). Anyways, in the books Ive read, it was battles like Bud Badsak, and Bud Dajo that ended large scale Moro uprisings. With losses in the thousands (men, women, and children). Though to be fair, the US gave them plenty of warning, and chances to come down peacefully. It was thier pride, and mistrust, that would rather them all die. However, there were small uprisings, and juromentado runs up till WWII. So Moroland was never completely pacified. For more on the history of Moroland battles you can look up Swish of the Kris on the Bakbakan Website. It was written by a guy named Vic Hurley. Swish of the Kris As for executions, most common method was hanging. I have the pics to prove it.

adding to this thread, but...

it seems wrong to me to take elements of a person's religious or spiritual beliefs and use them to torture them. Much less torture them before killing them.

We in the West (or of european ancestry) have tendency to do some awful things to indigenous cultures...most particularly the religious icons, behaviors, and beliefs.

I DON'T mean to start an argument here. Just...it seems very wrong.

How 'bout them Cubbies?

Ironically, of all the US generals in PI, I was most surprised to hear this story about Perhsing. He was very well respected, and even today his name in Moroland is respected, as a just warrior. For all his strength, historical accounts, suggest he was a just and fair man. Especially in a time of heavy racism, he didnt choose to kill for the pleasure of it, something which was common in the Fil-Am wars (look up the burning of Samar). The book Muddy Glory, by Russel Roth is another good resource for the time period.

Makes you feel sorry for the pigs......

Dear friends,

I do not want to pick up an argument here. I respect great men here such as Uncle Bill,Yvsa, Sarge, Rusty, Howard,John Powell and many others here so much and time and again I called HI a place of honor. In an international environment,in a world with different religions we should tolerate and accept each other and not harbor hate. Ghandi said once "You become what you hate most".

When I read arguments like this, my heart really breaks, I do not want to pick on Bill Marsh here, but do we really want to go so down and feel sorry for the pigs and not human beings!

I spent many years in the USA,loved the country, have my best friends there, a good friend of my mine Matt is a minister there. I really respect him,he runs two churches and has a lovely family and is loved by everyone and respects everyone. He is a true Christian.

I grew up with Jewish friends as well. I learned to respect their religion and now they live in different countries around the world.

I have Muslim friends, in Iran and outside, who believe in their religion and stick to it,who are lovely and peace loving people.

I have Persian friends who practice the ancient religion of Iran, Zoroastrians, lovely people and lovely religion.

I have Hindu friends who lived with me when I was a student we shared a flat in Germany.

All of us are friends Muslims, Jews, Christians, Hindus,Zoroastrians.

Unfortunately I do not have personal friends who are buddhists or practice other religions some only online friends.

But we are all friends. Let us be friends and take each other hands, we all have the same destiny, we are all mortals and time is ticking for each and anyone of us.

Hey, how come my name wasn't in that August Body?

Mann, your last post is why I redirected the subject.
We have been extremely careful with Moslim Mosques in the war. Did you see the news last night where the marines were backing away from a angry crowd and the Mosque? Rebels had holed up in there to attack the Coalition. We refused to return fire becasue that would harm a Shi'te holy place.

Our Government will never be dipping any bullets in blood in my name. We are all Brothers here.

Good men of good will are brothers and they will learn to bridge gaps created by any and all differences.

Mann, please stick around. The forum needs you.

Federico, nothing like an ever continuing search for truth no matter how difficult.

Whether this one is more fable than fact (I hope fable - I had thought that Pershing was highly respected for his wisdom and leadership, so he should have been able to figure a better way to get a message accross), human history is riddled with atrocities and injustices that might not be thought of as wrong at the time. One hopes that humanity has gotten to the point where so many acts are considered atrocities that they never happen. Then one looks at the Congo wars, Jeffry Dahlmer, etc. Hopefully less . . . but perhaps never is too much to ask for.

By the way, a WWII vet once told me how they had to handle the few Russian soldiers in Berlin who occasionally rampaged through the Western sector (drinking, looting, rapes, beating-up civilians). Official channels were too politically jittery to do much (this was the dawn of the Cold War). So one day the MPs took the latest bunch, beat them to a pulp, then dumped them over checkpoint Charlie. No complaints from the Russian MPs. Much quieter after that.

And, Man, if John Powell doesn't take my little travel trailer you can move in and help me clean khukuris!!!!
