solvang anyone?

The wife's actually even excited (she loves solvang).

Probably just for Sat (about 1.5 hours drive for me).

Hope to see ya there.

I, too, may have to make the drive. I have tried to go every year since the mid 80's?. It's about a one hour drive for me. Hope to see you there on Sat. I will be extremely hard to miss. Look for the guy you would least like to play football with.

One of these days I am going to make it out there to join you folks.
Every maker and collector I know who goes loves it.

Please say hello to Joel Chamblin, Gene Shadley, Dellana, Van Barnett, and Steve Freund (Tomway) for me, but above all enjoy!

Gusdude:I'll be thinking of you as I fondle.:)
I will give them all your best.

P.S. I'm heading to Eugene tonight and will pick up a pretty from Mr.Ruple.I think one will be done.

I'll be there for Saturday afternoon after a hard morning drive. Personally, I'm really looking forward to the chance to meet a number of really good makers and to see some of their samples first hand.

It is over a four hour drive for us and I promised my wife a relaxed drive back on Sunday with several stops of interest to her. We've had hotel reservations since the New Year's weekend. The knife show and a bike event will sure fill up Solvang.
:D

Perhaps I could recommend some interesting side (wife pleasing) amusements for you, assuming you aren't already all planned out?

JMX,

We're coming from the SF Bay Area, San Mateo County to be exact. However, we're been to Solvang a number of times and my wife will have no problem spending Saturday looking around the shops. We just want to have a good Swedish breakfast and then stop at places like Sycamore Hot Springs (near San Louis Obispo) on Sunday.

Now you could help with something else. I'm 59 now and thinking about retirement type living. Are there any retirement communities (not old-age homes) near Solvang that my wife could visit on Saturday afternoon?

I might drive up from San Diego. What's the show
like? Any Tactical makers going to be there?
Also how many dealers?

I did a write up on last years show...it's here somewhere...

Oh, there it is... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=137263

Solvang is a great place, and the folks there were great too...

But yes, it is a high-end makers show...

A word of mention, Yvon Vachon, god bless him, has passed on.

Yvon, if you're reading this buddy, you'll be sorely missed this year, and all others thereafter. :(

Have fun guys...but leave early to get there, take money, and that hotel I mentioned is the best deal in town...

Mel

p.s. Don't miss the 'Ostrich farm'...lol

From what I know, Avilla Beach is nearby as is San Luis Obpispo. They're where I'd kind of like to retire (only 39 now, working on it).

A side trip to Los Olivos nearby makes for a good couple hours. A rustic California town with lots of local winery tasting rooms. It's not Napa for big reds but the central coast offers some fine lighter wines.

I had planned on driving up for the day but my wife has actually suggested that we should stay over Saturday night. I am expecting to take posession of my new RAD Alaskan Malamute puppy that weekend, so I'm not sure yet how my knife obsession and my need for a new puppy will balance out. If we can work it out with the breeder, we'll probably go for the show on Saturday. Then have dinner at the Cabernet Bistro (killer eats and a great chef, not cheap though) and then rush home early Sun for Puppy delivery. I've been waiting a year for the right dog. My last Malamute (Shredder) passed last April after 10.5 years.

It's such a tough choice. Dog vs knives. In the wild you'd want one of each (at least). The dog might win and I might miss the show and dinner at the Cabernet Bistro because I already have good knives and no dog (wife has one, but it's her dog) I'll see what the breeder says. I'd like to do both.

Hope to see y'all there if I can work it out.

It looks like I don't get the puppy this weekend (promised for nest weekend though) as the breeder is working a big Pet expo in Orange County (which she has invited me and my wife to attend). This means I'm more inclined to go to Solvang, expecially as I'd get to show off my snazzy new Bladeforums T shirt. If I make it up, I'll be the big guy with a small beard and a BF shirt on. I know if I go to the animal expo, I'll spend less money and it's about a two hour drive in opposite directions so I can't do both.

Decisions, decisions.....

It'll likely be decided by what weather.com says about the weather in each location.

PS: If anyone is interested in the dinner thing, that might sway me.

We returned home last night after spending Saturday night in Solvang and seeing the show on Saturday afternoon. Personally, I'd like to thank the organizers and the knifemakers who were there. It was great fun meeting all of the name knifemakers who were personally available to show us their work and to talk to the attendees. It is a relatively small show which makes it all the better as far as the knifemakers having the time to spend with you. And, they even still had knives for sale on Saturday afternoon. I didn't purchase anything but my list of things I want to order sure went up. :D
