On the other hand, the Satin Jack never had a BG version that I can find -

BG ASH its an older model and could be revamped??? doesn't say its never been a battle grade.

My guess is:
D – guard battle mistress battle grade.
I believe the old to new clue is referring to:
old stock reshaped and/or resized to new Knife.

I'm guessing a larger battle grade Knife because of the $200 offering for prize winner.
Maybe because it's a bigger knife? I don't know
