Figured it out .

I'm trying to wire a female dryer outlet to my VFD so I can wire dryer plugs to different motors . I wired the outlet 1 2 3 G in that order with T1:t1/t7 T2:t2/t8/ T3 t3/t9 and the ground in a 4 prong , but now when I think about wiring the plug to the motor the black and red are the 2 outside prongs with white in the middle . So I'm confused as to the wires , should I have T1 and T2 as the outside prongs and T3 in the middle on the female end or is it right the way it is . How do I know which color wire is to each prong so to have the lines from the VFD match, I just think something is wrong.

Yes you should havethe hots red/line1 and black/line2 on outside like your plug is wired and your nuteral/white is the middle one.

This is how it is now , I haven't wired the motor yet but have wired the VFD to the Female box. I'm just thinking if the black and red are the two outside it's not wired right , on the male end which prong is black , I know white is the L prong but what order are the 2 hots?

If you've got a multi-meter you can always just test to see which lead goes to which plug if you haven't sealed things up. I have no idea about which way it SHOULD be though, just how you can figure out what you have right now.

I know which wire is to each to the female end from the vfd it's just the order of them I thinks wrong. To make L1 from the VFD match with L1 on the motor through the male plug prong and so on. Should I just rewire the female end so that the outside two ( normally hots) are T1 and T3 and wire the motor so black and red are either T1 or T3 and white will be T2 just start it and see which direction it runs ?

Has anyone been able to find a three pole, double throw (on-off-on) switch to use for this application? I looked for one online without success.

Easy. Go to eBay, type in 15a on/off/on switch and you'll have several to choose from.

Figured it out , L1 , L3 wired to black and red ,L2 white

I listed a couple switches from McMaster in the thread that Duffy linked. They work for me. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about my setup, three machines with a switch bank off of a single VFD.

Hi all,

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I had a quick related question:

I have a VFD and am planning to set it up exactly this way, with a female dryer outlet on the output side, and dryer plugs/cables wired to each of my motors. I had mentioned on another board that I was planning to do this, and got shot down with comments about how unsafe a practice this is, and how dryer receptacles/plugs are not rated for 3 phase power. But, from what I've read it seems to be a fairly common practice.

So, what's the general consensus? Is this ok to do?

Thanks in advance,

Lee
