Some 940 problems

Hello, I just wanted to see if anyone here could help out with a couple problems I've been having with my 940. I have had the knife for a few months now and from the start, the blade has a lot of play when it is closed. It is rock solid when open, but when it's closed, it has so much play that there is a clacking noise whenever the knife is tapped, and I can hear it when it is clipped in my pocket. I tried tightening the pivot screw, and it helps for a little while, but just until it starts to loosen again and goes back to how it was.

The second problem I have, is with the pocket clip. One day the clip got hooked on something and bent out of shape, so the clip lost its retention. I bent the clip back as best I could but it never got back to how it was like it was new. So I called Benchmade and they sent me a new clip, but when I tightened all the screws, the clip was nowhere near tight enough to hang onto a pocket. I included a picture so you can get a visual. Has anyone else had these problems before and know how to fix them? Thanks a lot in advance.

For the pivot try to use some blue loctite on the pivot screw that should help keep the screw from backing out once tightened to the wanted tightness. As for the pocket clip you can try to take it off and bend it back for a temporary fix but ultimately I would call Benchmade and they will send you out a new one for free. You can also ask for a deep carry clip while your at it. Hope you find these to work out for you.

Edit: if that's how the clip you ordered from BM came then something else is up. I've never seen one like that before. Maybe send it in for warranty work and they'll figure it out for you. That could solve both your issues.

Make sure the blade edge or tip isn't touching the back-spacer when closed. This is an issue from time to time with folders, and Benchmade isn't immune unfortunately.

I got a replacement clip from BM when my 940-1 clip exploded and it was also like yours. I carefully bent it into shape several months ago, still good.

put some blue loctite in the pivot, then tighten it to your desired tension then leave it for 24 hours. I would just bend the pocket clip back into shape. if you don't feel like doing that just send it into benchmade and they will sharpen it, take it apart and clean it, and they will fix your problems. :p:thumbup:

When you want to tighten a clip, you have to take it off the knife, put the screw hole end in a vise, and bend it past vertical (exceed the elastic limit) to return it to its original shape. Loosening a clip can be done with it on the knife, but I get more control working on a clip that is off the knife.

Yes, that is how the clip came from Benchmade, it just came in the mail today.

Easy fix. Grab some pliers and bend it slowly. Or put it in a vice and bend it slowly. It's not unheard of for that kind of thing to happen and it's always a simple fix, under 60 seconds guaranteed.

All three of my Axis-equipped Benchmades 'rattle' when closed. All three are also solid when opened up. I just assumed that was how they were?? I've also added LT to all three, as well as adjusted the pivot to where I wanted it.

^^^^Your knives should not rattle at all when closed or open. Not sure why three of yours are doing that.

There aren't that many things, aside from a loose stop pin that could cause that. Some use Loc-Tite to seal the pin in place, but that also increases the wear on the same spot every time the knife is opened. Some models have the (small) set screw to tighten the gap, others don't. In any case it's minor and annoying at the same time isn't it?

I looked at them all again, and I guess they all have very slight side-to-side play. I don't really notice without grabbling the blade and trying to bend it. I'm sure that pivot has everything to do with it, but it doesn't bother me at this point. They all came like that, and like I mentioned previously, I did play with all of the pivots when I got 'em. I have them just loose enough to allow the blade to fall via gravity. It's all good the way I have them set-up. The 940 is loudest though due to the length of the blade (translates to more movement), and Al scales. I dunno, I'm not too concerned, lol.

Well at the least you can send them back to BM for Life Sharp and let them know about the issue. I have had good experience with them in the past.
Plus they will regrind your edges too.

Do this.
