HELLO EVERYONE, AS SAID BEFORE I AM NEW TO THE KNIFE WORLD AND COULD USE SOME INPUT FROM OTHER COLLECTORS.
I AM SHALL WE SAY FINANCIALLY CHALLENGED
smile.gif

THE ONLY KNIFES I OWN AT THIS TIME ARE A BUCK FOLDING HUNTER #110 AND A SMALL SWISS ARMY POCKET KNIFE. I WANT TO PURCHASE A NEW FIXED BLADE AND A TACTICAL FOLDER
smile.gif

MY BUDGET IS ABOUT 50-75 DOLLARS FOR EACH ONE AND WAS WONDERING IF I COULD GET SOME ADVICE ON WHAT BRANDS I SHOULD BUY.
FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN SO FAR IN THAT PRICE RANGE I LIKE THE COLD STEEL RECON TANTO OR THE COLD STEEL SRK FOR THE FIXED BLADE
AND THE X-LARGE TANTO POINT 50/50 BLADE VOYAGER SEEMS LIKE THE FOLDER I AM LOOKING FOR.
ARE THESE GOOD KNIVES FOR THE PRICE RANGE I AM IN? ARE THERE SOME OTHER BRANDS I HAVE OVERLOOKED IN MY SHOPPING THAT I SHOULD CHECK OUT FIRST? AGAIN I AM NOT TO KNOWLEDGABLE IN THIS FIELD AND ANY ADVICE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED

WOULD ALSO JUST LIKE TO THANK ALL THOSE WHO RESPONDED TO MY FIRST COUPLE OF POSTS, AND YOU ALL ARE RIGHT THIS IS ADDICTIVE

Hi stubellos,

For a fixed-blade on a budget, I'd go for a Ka-bar. You can find 'em for around $35 and as far as I know, they have the same steel as the SRK. (Should be 1095.) Look better too in my opinion.

And here's another tip: Try not to post all in CAPITALS because many people consider that like SHOUTING!

Welcome to the Forums. Well, it has been said before I guess, but the first thing we'd need to know is what purpose do you have in mind for the tactical folder and fixed blade? If by tactical folder you mean, a pure self defense folder. In which role the folder will not be used for utility purposes, to keep a sharp blade at all times, methinks the CRKT Crawford Kasper Combat folder would be a good choice. If you are looking for a folder that would be used for both utility and tactical 'applications', something like a spyderco Native or Delica might be more suitable.

As for the fixed blade, I am not a real large fixed blade user. My favorite is the Spyderco Moran, which is not too big or strong compared to any of the Busse Bascis line. But it is an excellent cutter with an excellent sheath system. I'll let my fellow forumites flood you with suggestions for the fixed blade (and the tactical folder).

First off....Welcome to the forums!!!!

Second...You can't go wrong with CS. They offer a good value for the buck.

Third...I agree with Disco Stu that Ka-Bar makes a very good knife for about $35.00-$40.00. Check out their USMC Fighting/Utility model.
It's a little old fashioned but I just love the look and feel of stacked leather handles. The handles should be fine unless you intend on visiting a rain forest/jungle or something similar.

Fourth...Also take a look at CRKT (Columbia River Knife & Tool) for folders. They have a great value for the dollar also.

Good Luck with your decision.

Uh, Carbon V is not 1095, unless Cold Steel has changed over. Reliable sources (mostly from this forum) say Carbon V is 50100b, almost the same as 52100 except it has less chromium (about .4% compared to 1.5% for 52100) and has about .15% vanadium whicereas 52100 has little or none. And carbon, of course, 1095 has about 1% carbon, .3% manganese and a few traces of phoisphorus and sulphur, according to various charts.

"stub",

Hop over to the "Knives For Sale" Forum, and look around. You can find some great buys there.

.

Cold Steel, and CRKT are VERY GOOD knives, even for the fairly low prices that they sell for.

For a fixed blade, check out the Bushman series from Cold Steel.
For a folder, the Spyderco Endura and Delica are hard to beat. The CRKT line is also very nice for the price.

Alberta Ed,

My mistake then. I heard that Cold Steel switches what Carbon V is quite often and that sometimes, it is 1095.

Either way, 1095 is a damn fine steel and you can't beat the traditional look of the Ka-bar. IMHO of course.

Ha, ha. No one's stipulated that before.

Being an avid amateur at best, my advice is to follow the suggestions above.

Hi...

Depending on what you want to do with your fixed blade,, a CS Recon Tanto is pretty limited in use...

If you want a general purpose all around good FB then you'll want to look at the Fallkniven FI comes in around $75.00 or less.
Probably one of the best smaller fixed blades on the market in that price range...

Tactical folder, look at a CRKT Kit Carson. Good quality blade and a decent price as well...

Hope this helps..

I would suggest taking a look at Fallkniven fixed blades, they have had alot of positive feedback during testing. They are very high quality at a reasonable price.I have a Fallkniven S1 forest knife enroute to me..They are v-10 stainless steel with a thermo something handle, more dense than Kraton.I paid 74.95 for the knife,a real good deal.As far as a folder, alot of the Spyderco's fall into your price range, you might even be able to find a new in box BM axis lock on the f/s board in that upper price range if you keep a good watch out for those great deal posts.Good Luck,Ralph

Hmmm..tactical folder for $75 or less. I'd check out the For Sale forum here and keep my eyes peeled for an Emerson CQC7. If you find one, ask where the locking liner contacts the pivot area of the blade. If it's still before the halfway point, buy it. The CRKT Kasper is a good one too.
Fixed blade: any of the above suggestions are great. Fallkniven's are nice knives; the best advice I can give is to check out the For Sale forum morning and night and have sellers email you pics, then use the search feature to search the "Knives reveiw and testing" forum for the knife in question. Always research and review before you buy, and don't forget to give a look to the Good Bad and Ugly forum before you make a purchase (you just never know these days..)
Best of luck, and keep us posted!

For a fixed blade go with a buck nighthawk(cheap at smoky mountain right now!), or a kabar. For a folder go with a kershaw whirlwind, great little addicting knife! at around 50 dollars!!!! (can get them at smoky mountain for 49.95, plus 5.99 ship. 1-800-251-9306)
