i am very new to the knife collecting arena and had a quick qestion.
i have been looking around at some different knives and noticed something i need some help with. cold steel sent me a catalog and they sell the recon tanto new for something like $92, i also get a catalog called brigade quartermasters and they sell the recon tanto for like $59 what i was interested in was this. is the knife the same from both catalogs or could the cheaper of the 2 be a factory second the price of cold steel's factory second recon tanto is still less than the brigade quartemasters price. and is it better to buy directly from the company or can other mail order companies be trusted to have the same high standards as cold steel claims it has.
also any advice in general on different companies track records and the quality of there blades would be greatly appreciated.

i hope that these questions are not to simple for this forum. i am very new to knife collecting and am just looking for some good advice. any help greatly appreciated

First off, welcome to the forums! As for your question, it is often much cheaper to buy from on-line knife dealers than directly from the factory. The difference in prices will often be VAST!

Second, while not having any dealings with Brigade Quartermasters myself, they have a very good reputaion and I doubt you'd have any problems if you were to order from them.My advice is to shop around the net and see what's out there. Use the Good, Bad, and Ugly forum (under the Knife Exchange) to see who's good and who's not.

Personally I've had good dealing with:

MJ&S Knives www.mjsknives.com
The Knife Outlet www.knifeoutlet.com
Bayou Lafourge Knife Works www.knifeworks.com

Any other questions, just let me fly. We were all newbies at some point

Welcome! As for your questions, the Brigade tanto for $59 will be exactly like the one from CS for more $. For example I once bought A Boker knife from them direct for $140.00. I got internet access about A week later and found I could have gotten the same knife online as much as $50.00 cheaper. As for the CS seconds, I have never owned one, but I hear that any defects are cosmetic only and that they are as good quality as the regular production models. So in short if you are going to use it, A second should be fine. I hope I answered your questions. One more thing, you may want to take A look around in the exchange forum. You may find one there. They are generally always cheaper than any dealer and often new. Good luck, bteel

Yeah, Johan is right about the difference in prices over the net and in person at the store.
Example, the POLICE UTILITY costs close to 300 "Canadian" dollars AT THE STORE, and something like 170 at the same stores website. I personally think this is a rippoff, but who am I to judge.

Stu,

Welcome to the forums. You won't find a better place to be if you like blades.
I have dealt with Brigade Quartermasters several times in the past and have had no problems with their products or service.

As for CS seconds, they perform just as well as the originals. If you are going to use the knife, save your money and get a second.

Online there are several great people to deal with for production and custom cutlery. There are also a few that are not. Check out the GBU forum to get an idea of who to deal with, and definitely check out the Exchange here. There are some great deals to be had.

Stu, I looked at both the Recon Tantos, production and factory second, and I settled on the factory second for a BARGAIN.

I can not see what would possibly make this knife a second. I look and look and thrash it and thrash it and nothing has given me any indication as to why this knife ended up in the seconds pile.

If you want those Cold Steel seconds, by all means... take advantage of the price cut. And do surf around for better prices than factory direct. 1SKS and MJS and M. Payne will give you way better customer service than Cold Steel anyways.

Whoa! I'm sorry Stubellos but I've gonna have to yank back that welcome mat. You called us "knifeforums.com" not "BladeForums.Com" so we're gonna have to ask you to leave now
