Had a good time at BLADE this year, got to meet some new people and enjoy times with old friends. Even remembered to take a few pics of knives amid all the scenery. Not the best quality on the cellphone pics, but it's something.
Checked out the new Queen Sowbelly design. Nice, but I actually prefer the Case version.
I really liked the new Case Bone Stag handle material with the Federal shield and CV steel. I really liked how the swell of the material makes them more hand-filling, especially with the Swayback Gent. That said, I really liked the Case Sowbelly in this handle material.
The Behring Made Scagel style knife I took a pic of was my favorite. Felt great in-hand and fit and finish were very good.
I consider Dan Eastland at Dogwood knives a friend. We both share a fondness for blades a lot thinner than the current trend in blade thickness. One of his designs looked like a large Fish Knife, minus the scaling serrations. He actually said he sketched it out, then saw something similar while watching an episode of the Vikings. The other knife is his Echo 5 model with a bloodwood handle. I really liked this handle material.
Next I visited another friend L.T. Wright. I liked the new scandi-grind fixed blade design he is making for Bens Backwoods called the Lagom Bush Knife. The design principle comes from the description by Mors Kochanski of a good knife for the woods. The small Canadian style knife was my favorite though. Blade length is around 3.5" and the blade is very thin - maybe a tad over 2mm. It cuts like a razor and is splinter picking pointy. The steel is something different from L.T. as it's AEB-L stainless. Even though I was poor at BLADE this year, I got this one.
Other than that, I helped a good friend trade an old Case Canoe towards a new Case 2-bladed Tiny Toothpick. He's a big fan of the Toothpick pattern and says they're a great knife if you're a cigar smoker. He almost didn't go this year as it's been a tough year, but it was nice to see the smile on his face. Though the old Canoe was nice, it had some bad memories for him so a double win in getting rid of it towards a new knife he likes.
After years of going to BLADE, seeing old friends has become more important than the knives to me.
