A couple shown (not eagles) go back to the 1740s. The brass hilt in the foreground a "troupes de marine" short sword from before 1750. The big Scandinavian hussar hilt sabre vertical is about 1750.

The eagles range from the 1790s up to the 1850s.

The two Calvary swords with the hilts on the top right really catch my eye. But they all look pretty grand to me.

The larger one is Scandinavian circa 1750, IDed by the curator of the Higgins Armory Museum The blade from the Wundes family of Germany.

The rust spot has been removed. All in all. entirely sound after the centuries and a real treat. The single copper wire original to the sword.

In scale to some other sabres

The smaller ebony gripped one is an infantry sword from the 1790s period.

The eagles are really my passion and I have found them all at bargain prices. I made the switch to period swords because they are actually better value for the money (for my purposes). I do cut with some of them and a couple bought specifically for that duty.

Not to be cheesy but someday I'm gonna make a Wonder Woman's sword, which features an eagle handguard.

Believe me, there are plenty of takes on the theme. Here is a common guard on late 19th century military association swords.

Thanks

Had I continued with reproductions over the past decade, no doubt I would have pursued some Albion and Arms&Armor. One by one the reproductions move on to other homes I do miss some of them. I find myself at the point that I lack little aside from maybe rotating more out to upgrade other older examples. I had started searching out period swords more than a decade ago but by 2004 had found myself feverishly addicted. Having filled the niche of eagles I had longed for the twitching "buy" ands "bid buttons finger has relaxed quite a bit.

Some consider it a real side business but I really try not to look at collecting in that vein. There are collectors I know well that have turned over many dozens along the way. Mostly I collect pairs that represent dress vs duty, curved vs straight and so on. You can see that in pairs on that rack and in the picture of those two ebony gripped swords. For the most part my interests are from the mid 18th century to the mid 19th century. Most of the eagles are from about a twenty year period up to the War of 1812 and a bit beyond.
