I was following a deer trail through a local park. Along the way I almost stepped on this little dude right on the trail. I'll admit he startled me!

We parted ways amicably, and I snapped some pics of a few wild edibles. Mmmmm, minty.

Garlic mustard ahoy! (also some old dry burdock)

Nature can be so orderly. These guys were lined up like little garlic soldiers.

More pics on the way..

Not so edible, but here's something's leftovers.

Lots of bones around this day.

Anyone want to guess at this wild edible?

2nd pic of same plant. Hint: I'll be making some "pink lemonade" from it this summer. :)

And a parting shot of a random flower in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks for looking!

Cool pics. Thanks.
It that Staghorn Sumac?

I went out on lunch today as well. Found two small Morel mushrooms, a ton of the Garlic Mustard that you have in your pic but no garlic or leeks. Still a good time to be outdoors. The banquet has begun. :D

Cool pics. I love the wild edible plants. Has to be one of the best things to have knowledge of that.

Indeed it is Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina). Makes for a tasty beverage. Here's some of last summer's harvest of sumac berries.

And a jug of the good stuff!

Nice pictures, John.

Couple of things - you said that your pack is based on the Max bottle bag? What are the other bags attached on the left and the front?

Also, just received 'Nature's Garden' today - what an excellent book. (I previously picked up the Forager's Harvest.) I ordered directly from the author, as mentioned on the web site and it was here in quick order.

For anybody that wants 2 really great wild edible books, highly recommended and if you don't want to take my word for it, check out the reviews by Nancy Turner and our own Marty Simon!

OMG you pulled that outta nowhere! I haven't seen Staghorn Sumac since I was a kid. Nice

Doc, the pouch on the left is a Maxpedition 7x5 low-profile pouch. On the front is a permanently attached pouch which comes as part of the bottle bag. Also, the water bottle carrier does NOT come with a shoulder strap, so I bought one for a dollar at a local store.

I remember Marty telling us about Nature's Garden. Glad to hear it's available now! It's on my "to buy" list.

I'll second that recommendation! Love both of them (probably FH is better, but both really great)- ESPECIALLY for those of you in the Midwest.

And healthy, too!
We picked a bunch last summer and dried it in the food dehydrator for later. We've only made a batch or two from the dried ones, and it hasn't been as good as fresh. Don't know if it's the drying or just the random variation where some berries are better than others.

I just ordered "Nature's Garden." I'm currently borrowing Thayer's first book, "The Forager's Harvest" from the library. I borrowed it last summer too, and kept it out for months! He's got an amazingly informative, personal style of writing and teaching. Can't wait for N.G. to arrive.

It came today! :) Amazing book. I can't wait to read and re-read it this thing. Sam Thayer is a true expert, a great writer, and has the perfect attitude for what he does.

A nice surprise inside: "John, enjoy the harvest! -Sam Thayer"

My current outdoors books. Some are mine, some are the library's.

Just the wild edibles books. My favorites are Thayer's two and the North American Field Guide by Elias and Dykeman.
