I have not posted much here in a while, so I thought I would share this pic of some of my fighters that Coop did for me.
All blades forged from the finest 1084 Aldo has!
Let me know what you think.
Thanks for looking.

Hi,
this is my first post on bf, but I have been poking around for some time now.
When I ran across this pic I had to tell you those are very cool; do they have a hamon temper line? It really looks like it.

I think you could really gig some muthas with those, that's what I think! ;) :D :)

I love them Mace....:thumbup: Thanks for sharing... Soooooo..... I've looked, and been unable to find a WIP or tutorial on upset integral guards like on your knives and the ones Joe Keeslar does... Any chance you'd do one? Or even mind if I contact you for a conversation???:D:D

Very nice, the wraps look wicked!

Thanks for the nice comments fellas!
Tin, Welcome to the forums. Those are hamon that you are seeing. All these blades were quenched with clay on them, then polished and etched.

Brian, Right now I just dont have the time to do a tutorial, but I would be happy to explain how I do the guards. As far as I know Joe does them starting with the handle(which is how I did the first one in the pic)...I usually start with the blade(preform) then start to shape the handle a bit. I might use a round bar, fuller, or horn of the anvil to start the finger notch area. Once I have it deep enough I then clamp the blade in the vise point down...close to the finger guard area....(I'm not telling you when I take a heat...I figure you will know when you need one)...I tend to "tip" the handle portion of the bar back out of the way a bit...then I go to town with a cross pien of a smaller hammer on the finger guard area...straight down towards the tip. This goes on for a bit till it starts looking like what I want. Making sure not to push too much metal to one side or the other. You can straighten it out a bit over the hardy hole...then straighten the spine in a vise. Then I will forge the rest of the blade...then cut it off the bar and finish the handle.
I hope that helps.
Mace

Cool. Thanks. That's will help. My first attempt was before I bought my post vise. The guard turned out well on my first attempt but too far forward as I had forged the blade in first....Just trying to shorten my learning curve. I appreciate the help.:D:D

Mace, those are awesome! You coming to Ashokan? If so, any possibility of seeing these in person?

Brian, It does help to do just the blade pre form...(keeping it thick)..then forge the finger guard....then forge your blade out.

Mike, Sorry....I will not be able to attend Ashokan this year. The due date for our first child will be just the week before! You jokers will have to NOT drink booze all weekend with out me!
Someone please record the shenanigans for me.

There won't be any this year, I'll bet. None of the usual suspects (well, I guess I mean us...) are attending this year. I can't help but think I'm making a mistake for not working harder to weasel out of work for this year. Lots of awesome folks are going.

Might be kind of cool to see a couple slabs of wood on this style, in the same style as your stag utility.

But who is going to hook Sam up with a new bumper sticker or hood ornament?!

Matt, I have two on the bench that if all goes well will have wood on them.

Thanks again for looking guys!
