I just got back from a 4-H Club benefit BBQ and had a great time. One thing that made it really fun is that the daughter of my son's girlfriend is President of the chapter and had asked if I had anything to donate to the silent auction they have to raise money for the club.

I gave her two brand new 110 Founder's editions (in tins) still in the plastic clampack and two of the Dymondwood Vantage Selects for the auction. Wow, the two 110's went for $140 and $125 and the two Vantages went for $85 each! It kinda blew me away, especially since there was no alcohol served there. ;)

They also had a live pie auction (pies either made by the youngsters or their Moms) and the first one out (an apple pie made by a young man about 12) sold for $180!!! It was won by his Grandad! :D

Just a good bunch of folks supporting a good bunch of kids and I was happy to help them out.

It was my pleasure and also fun. I also noticed that a very large number of the men and many of the kids had knives either on their belts or the pocket clip type stuck in their pockets. I cut my meat with an Alpha folding hunter I wore on my belt and my son's girlfriend's daughter used the Cherrywood Vantage that I gave her a few weeks ago. Not one eyebrow lifted anywhere!

It is amazing how much items will bring, at an auction, for a great cause. 4-H is an outstanding cause...

Most of the kids in 4-H are motivated, responsible, and stay out of trouble. The parents are usually good folks too, and are very involved in their kids lives. It doesn't surprise me that nobody freaked when you used your knife.

Sounds like you had a great time.

Its nice to hear something positive like this!I alwsys use my 110 in restaurants, but around nhere nobody looks at ya even if you got a 119 on your belt in the malls.LOL

Good deal, Dave. It's nice when people are on board at a benefit rather than looking for a bargain.

Kudos to you for your generosity.

best regards -

Dave, Yes thats the way those affairs go. My kids 4-H group here operates the same way. A good bunch. Thank you for your generosity. DM

I have to say that I was very impressed with the 4-H'ers and the families. I've heard about them for many years of course, but was never involved or even knew anyone who was.

One of the first things I noticed was a table set up to display a nice Remington target .22 and some targets with very nice groups shot in them by some of the kids. I learned that they have a "shooting sports" program dedicated to teaching the youngsters safe gun handling, responsibility and marksmanship. I think that may be something that will get me off my flabby butt and out with them by volunteering my help. I would love to introduce them to the muzzleloaders that I'm so fond of.

I'm really glad I donated the knives because that seemed to give the guys something to bid one. There are a lot of wineries and vinyards in the area so they had bunches of bottles of wine donated but otherwise it was mostly knick knacky items and jewelry that would appeal more to the women.

I'm feeling a little guilty though because although I bid on a few items I didn't win any (don't drink or even like wine and rarely ever wear jewelry anymore ;)), and there was no charge () for the BBQ! All the food and drinks were paid for out of the clubs treasury, so they have to cover the cost of that before they will show any profit from the auctions.

As it turns out, both 110's were won by one family. After I left and the auction closed, the one of the family of the winners asked my son if I had any more of them I'd like to get rid of (I still have six or seven) so I've agreed to sell them three more but the money goes to the club. That should help some toward their bottom line and will ease my guilt a little about freeloading a great meal.

My son's girlfriend also told me last night that there was one very dissapointed 12 year old boy from the club after it was over. He had bid every dime he had trying to get one of the Vantages but had been outbid, so we're going to take care of that this week. I think I'll give him one of the Cherrywood Avids as he had handled the one I gave to my son's girlfriend's daughter and wanted one real bad.

I'd encourage everyone to get involved with a group like that if possible. It seems to be such a great bunch and the kids are doing really wholesome activites which I think will turn them into fine adults. I know I'm going to keep an eye open for good deals on Buck knives so I will have more to donate when the next benefit rolls around, they seem to be a big hit with the bidders.

It sounds like you had a great time, and made quite an impression. I'll bet they would really enjoy having you teach them about muzzle loaders, and sharing your knowledge of Buck knives. Who knows, maybe some new Buck collectors in the future.

As much as we all like our knives, there is more satisfaction to be had in sharing with others (especially kids), and seeing their excitement.

You know, I think I get as much enjoyment out of giving knives away to those I know will like them as I do buying them for myself. It's just really fun watching their faces light up, especially the kids.

I'm sure I impressed them with one thing, my ability to pack away the food! I'd only eaten a couple of pieces of toast all day before the BBQ and I really put away some BBQ!

Dave,
Good job on supporting our youth. 4-H is a great organization and one of the things I really appreciate about it is the way it seems to encourage family involvement. When my two (now adult) daughters were of junior high age, they were involved in the 4-H display program leading up to and through our local county fair. I noticed that all the kids really had a good time enjoying and sharing their hobbies with one another and the adult leaders did a great job of making everybody feel welcome. We still have two of the homemade display units we built to showcase the two exhibits.

I'm glad to hear you had a great time Dave.Buck knives and 4H folks are kinda like peanut butter & jelly.:)

:D And a big hearty belch after the meal really let them know. Well, that's considered polite in some cultures.

Your one helluva guy Dave! Keep up the great work! That is too cool!

Thanks Jim, but I don't feel like I did much myself. I know that I paid no MORE than $20 each (delivered) for a bunch of those 110's and some were $15. The Vantages also ran about the $15 mark. There were folks there that paid BIG bucks for some of the other items and especially the pies. My son's girl friend took a Chicken pot pie she made from scratch and it went for $180 and someone elses fruit pie went for $320!

God bless you brother. I have kids in 4H. My kids raise 4 calves each year to sell and donate the money. I donate 2 steers for our annual banquet. I donate the animals the club pays for the slaughtering. My sister in law does the cooking and grilling. We have auctions at the event also. Our boys and girls clean up public parks and other areas, plant trees and flowers. They really put into their futur and stay outta trouble.
Its so nice of you to do what you done AFTER the fact.

Wow man, now you and yours are REAL contributers!

I've been thinking about all the unused facilities that I have here on my place. I know that my son's girl friend mentioned that some of the kids live in residential areas and aren't allowed to keep animals like sheep or calves there. I'm wondering if maybe I should offer some space here to one or two of them that want to raise a sheep or calf? Things are just going to waste around here, eight pipe corrals and a seven stall barn with runs out of each stall are just sitting here empty growing a fine crop of weeds. In fact, I just hired a young man to clean up around here for me so it wouldn't look so much like a wilderness. I wouldn't want to fill the place up, but one or two wouldn't be bad, plus it might help me keep some of the weeds down! ;)
