Dear Forumites,

many thanks for your help.

I am here to ask again some help for a well known Italian Custom Knifemaker, who wants to improve his use of CPM steels. He need some advices, because he had some problems as I wrote in

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=163762

This is a small abstract:

"an Italian Custom Knifemaker I met, complained he tried to use CPM 440V and CPM 10V, in bars of 1 inch, and he had BIG problems to forge it.

Moreover, he wasn't able to work and finish them after the heat treatment, because they were too wear-resistent to be "worked" by abrasives he uses.

He really wants to try these alloys, but he needs some hints how to "work" them and where he can find some bars 1/6-1/8 of an inch.
"

Here is the URL of the site of this Knifemaker. Have a look, there are nice knives I saw at MICA in Rome, Italy:

Could you please help him to solve his problems? You can post here your advices or send it to me or him.

Many Thanks in Advance again.

Buon giorno, Falcenberg.

The Magician is correct in stating that you'll get your best response to this query in the Shop Talk forum. But in the meantime, you may want to try to track down some contact info for Master Smith Rick Dunkerley. I believe he has had some experience forging 10V.

Falcenberg, concerning forging, given the way these steels are made, and the availability of the steel in stock form, I don't see any benefits to forging, unless it is going to save you metal, and the cost considering time to forge to shape has to out weigh that. I can't see any improvement to the grain structure resulting, as the optomization of such is the main benefit of the CPM process, in fact I would assume it is just going to be degraded. In regards to working it, you probably want to use a better quality belt. Drop Phil Wilson (seamount@bigplanet.com) an email and ask him what he uses to grind those steels as he has worked with a lot of them.

Note, he already posted in the "Shop Talk" forum, the link is in the above post.
