I was reluctant to say anything about this earlier, as we weren't sure there would be a happy ending.
Two weekends ago, my wife & I helped out at a bone marrow drive here in Pleasant Hill.
The drive was for the daughter of a family we're friends with here. The little girl, Natalie, had leukemia, went through chemo, was (we thought) cancer free, and she started back to school last fall.
After a test in January, the doctors found out that the leukemia was back. So, while she'll be going through chemo again, the little girl needed a marrow transplant; her ancestry consists of three asian ethnic groups, the chances of finding a match was very slim.
Long story short, we not only have a match, apparently we have two. An individual was found who was a fairly close match, but there was a 'cord blood' match as well. I wasn't even aware that 'cord blood' could be used in these situations.
And another really cool thing, that all you knife knuts will love: as we were processing registrants (paperwork, cheek swabs, etc.) a young woman came to our table, went through the process, and as she was leaving to finalize everything, I noticed a Kershaw Chive clipped to her pocket. I asked her about it, and she showed it to me and a couple of other folks there; everyone thought it was "the coolest little knife!" they had ever seen. I knew about chives already, of course, but it was nice to not only see a knife being carried, but a really nice one to boot, and to see other folks have a positive response to it as well. (Good job Kershaw. )
She went to finish up her registration, and my wife leans over to me and says, "that made your whole day, didn't it?"
Later that day, we found out about the matches.
So, the little girl (Natalie) isn't out of the woods yet, but if you kind folks here would send up a little smoke & prayers when you can, it would be much appreciated.
thx - cpr
