In light of all this shooting and sickness, I've experienced some personal good news. Of course, it's only personally good news, and doesn't affect the community at large.

I helped butcher a deer for the first time tonight. I'd never even seen it done, but a buddy asked me to help. Next thing I knew I was comparing my Sher Boomerang to my Sher M-43 for bone chopping. I took to using my Boomerang for taking meat off the ribs and cutting fat off some of the cuts.
I muchly enjoy deer meat, and find myself ever thankful for the sacrifice that this animal made for my friend and me.

Nextly, I was promoted to black belt on Wednesday. It was a big deal for me since my teacher gave it to me (as opposed to testing in front of a board of teachers), and it means a lot that he thinks of me as having enough expertise to warrant a black belt. Of course, he insists I still test in front of the board, but whatever. It just means the world that my teacher considers me at that level.

Venison is some good eats, Aint It!
The Hunting and processing are what make it Fun.
Congrats for getting your black belt....Well Done!
Good to hear some good news for a change.

Congratulations on your graduation to that level, and the honor your teacher showed you.

You know, the idea of a baby bonecutter seriously began to dawn on me...

Congratulations M.D.! It is indeed quite an honor when someone we highly respect surprises us with a such a gesture we feel totally undeserving of getting. After thinking it over for a while we then realize our teacher has more confidence in us than we have in ourselves, or at least that's the way I see things anyway. ;) :D

Much to our surprise an old friend showed up on our doorstep the other day asking if we'd be interested in some of last year's venison. We told him, "Sure, as long as it's not freezer burnt." Fortunately it wasn't and so now we have several packages of steak, deerburger, and a couple of packages of backstrap!!!!!
.

I never mentioned the coolest part about the deer. My friend had hit it with his truck but only broke a leg. Well, he's not about animal suffering. So he decides to GET OUT OF THE TRUCK AND RAN THE DEER DOWN.
I almost crapped myself when he explained that he actually chased a deer. He showed me where he stabbed it in the lungs and heart once he caught up to it.
He's a very reverent type, too. He's not the kind of guy who kills for kicks, and really didn't want the deer to suffer. Plus, you know, meat.
