So quite a while back I bought a knife from Brian Goode. I like his work and asked him about making me a new knife based off of one that I had owned for years.

The original knife I bought in early 91. It was an Aristocrat Wraith. I saw a review for it in the back of some knife magazine, basically they said it was an OK knife for an OK price. I had no internet back then and the few knife mags that were out were it for my source of info. The knife held up to hard use all over and some stupid abuse here and there. I bent it one time pretty good throwing it ( I said stupid abuse, I was 19:D) which I straitened out , but where it rode on my gear tended to have me land on it with my hip and to this day it has a slight bend right above the guard. So I wanted a heavy duty, better quality version of my old knife. That’s where Brian came in.

The result was the skunk. I asked Brian to make a knife similar to my old one, for one simple reason. I liked the shape and I have used it for a long time. So in 18 years or so I will have enough time with the skunk to write a review and compare it to my old knife.:D

I did just get the knife back from my buddy who is a saddle maker. I was trying to merge a few concepts and I am not sure how it will work out. Since this is my first go at designing any kind of sheath instead of hacking up other stuff and modifying it, I am not to concerned that it didn’t turn out exactly like I thought it would.

Due to limited space I had to modify the sheath on my old knife, which left most of the handle exposed, I liked that so we made the new sheath to be similar. Another issue is most of my outdoor stuff now involves being around horses. On horse back a cross draw holster seems to work best for me, so the knife was going to have to go on my right side. The last issue is I hate tying crap to my legs and I don’t like sheaths that dangle. So we set this sheath at about a 30% cant and moved the slot for the belt down some. Unfortunately due to how the sheath was made in and effort to keep it thin while using heavy duty leather you can see in the pic the knife sits pretty high on the belt. I haven’t got to wear this enough yet to see if it’s going to be a issue. I know the knife sits high enough to bump into a rifle stock if you were stalking while hunting but will have to see how it does for normal camp stuff. The only other thing that bugs me is making a leather retention strap that doesn’t get cut by the blade when you take the knife out or put it in. We at least made this strap to be replaceable if it gets cut up to much. So here are some pics and I am open to comments good or bad.

I like the look of the Skunk although I'd prefer it if the grind started a little closer to the end of the handle !

Hmmm, I was thinking after comparing the two that it needed a choil. Why would you want the edge closer to the handle vs where it is now or a choil?

Nice:thumbup: I don't think they get much better than that!

I would also prefer the edge closer to the handle. It allows for more precise cutting, at least with my hands.

Just a personal thing I guess, I just feel I have more control when the edge starts as soon as the handle stops !

I can't be certain without an in-hand shot, but I'd bet there's just enough ricasso there to choke up on:thumbup: Just loop your finger over the guard, and the edge is right where you want it. To me, that's the way it should be-the lack of the cut-out choil means there's nothing to snag the blade on:cool:

I don’t think I have a knife with a blade right at the handle so I cant say, I will agree a choil will snag on stuff, so the blade at the handle may be better.

Good looking Sheath!!!!

I am always torn between wanting the edge nearer to the handle and having room to choke up on the blade.

I dont care for a Choil as they do snag on things and leaving the blade to start out some gives you the choil feel without the snagg.

There are always tradeoffs in each design feature it seems.

I do however have knives I CANT choke up on and it has bugged me when I have wanted to.

Give us a field report on the "Skunk" when you can :thumbup:

Also I was matching the older knife. If it worked for him all these long years it should work for him :)

Anyways, I thank you for letting me make that blade for you Sir!!

A fine looking knife that can handle just about anything, I bet. Sheath is sweet too. Looking forward to a review.

When I manage to find some free time I will do a field report and maybe try a comparison between the two. :D

My buddy Allan actually has a web page http://www.sperlingsaddlery.com/ I have know him for at least 10 years now and I got to work with him on and off for a few years before he retired and started saddle making.

Great looking knife!

I personally love how the blade meets the handle as I tend to like to choke up on them in that way myself.

I also have an Aristocrat Wraith--Good knife for the $ back then.

I like the Brain Goode knife about 10 times better..

Brain makes GREAT knives!!!!!
