Hello everyone.

Looking for some feedback on S35VN steel for a ~3" fixed blade in an EDC role.

A search didnt really turn up what I am looking for.

Is this considered a good stee? How is the edge retention, toughness, etc....

Just wanting to get some more info and opinions on the steel before pulling the trigger on a purchase.

Thanks in advance!

Drew

IMO, it is a well rounded performer. It's tough, wear resistant and has good corrosion resistance. It's not the best steel out there, but its very good overall.

I think it is a good steel all purpose steel, others wil disagree. From my use it takes a great edge and holds it well. It also resists chipping better than a lot of common steels such as d2 and s30.

if your dont mind going into carbon steel
infi or CMP3v are pretty stain resistance and a heck of a lot tougher and have a bit more edge retention

The maker heat treats it to 61 so it should be good. Just purchased it. Thanks to everyone for the input!

I've heard that S35VN is easier/cheaper to work with compared to S30V at the expense of some performance. In actual use I've found them to be very similar with S35VN being a bit easier to sharpen and S30V holding its edge slightly longer. IMO s35vn is a quality steel

When you consider that Chris Reeve Knives wins the annual BLADE SHOW "Manufacturer's" award, and the popularity and price of his folders (Sebenzas @ $400+), and that his small (2.9" blade) and large (3.6" blade) folders are all produced in S35VN blade-steel at 58-59 RC hardness, this should give you a good hint.
Fixed or folder...these blades are at 0.125" thick and more recently @ 0.140" thick; no different than many small fixed blades.

I've heard several different knife makers say that performance wise, s30v and s35vn are basically the same steel.
