Some help on scales

I just received a pair of redwood root scales from Burl Source. They are absolutely beautiful! They are not stabilized and I was wondering if it was best to cut them to shape before stabilizing, stabilize first, or don't worry about it. BTW, they'll be adorning my BK-7.

Alright then, I've used that. I would finish the scales completely and heat up the wood hardener some, being careful cause it's flamable. Double boiler on a barbeque in your backyard would work. have a masons jar, lid and ring. Get the wood hardener warm and drop the scales in, cap it off and as it cools it should draw a vacuum and help suck the wood hardener into the wood. leave it in there for a couple days. Take it out and let dry for a few days. Lightly sand once dry to even out the finish, like 220 to 320 grit. Hit it with a couple coats of wipe on polyurethane and your golden like a shower. I've used that product but not to the extent outlined above. Conceptually it seems sound, just don't burn your house down.

I'd like to do that technique on these zebra stripy ones here,
