Being fairly new to (recreational/sport) knife throwing I have had to learn the $$ way what knives I would enjoy throwing, and/or be able to throw the best as I have been increasing in experience, skill, and of course always learning. Also there is the cost vs. quality aspect as well. This is a 'hugh and broad' variable for each person on what they want in a knife, and how much we're willing to spend for it/them. What I have learned is I pretty much like most knives out there, (some better than others) both custom and mass produced, but always learned about the "true specifications and dimensions" after I or friends received them.
Having been hit with an early rough temp wise extra cold winter here in MN, (other places I've hear as well) not being able to throw as much as I'd like, I decided do 'something' different. Using my 30+ years as a machinest, sheetmetal fab, engineering, and inspection experience in the manufacturing industry I worked in, I though I'd inspect, compile and document (some limited) data on as many throwing knives as I could get my hands on from my own collection and a couple friends.
I spent over a month collecting these specs/dims with properly calibrated digital 6" - 24" calipers, micrometers, scales, etc. Then about a week trying make an (appropriate?) spread sheet to give enough information to help others and me see what these knife specifications really are in the specific units I had available to me. No right or wrong on anything spec'd out, just the actual findings. You can draw you own conclusions. The only 'opinions' from me is in the last column of 'Misc Notes Info" where I stated what I thought based on my limited experience. Some data like "Material and Hardness" is taken from the published info by the manufacturers as I didn't have the proper equipment (other than a file test) to test the actual hardness here at my house.
This spreadsheet below is bigger than you see, but I couldn't save the original as an image, or paste it as a table because of it's size, so I eliminated some categories like "material finish", "handles or scales", etc.. Not crucial information, so you can find that out on your own if so interested. I also didn't list any retailers or prices per forum rules, and obviously on the mass produced items there are so many places and different prices, you can also find that out on your own.
Once again this information is what I found using modern mfg inspection equipment and techniques, and is not all inclusive. I found several ranges in specs on some models. Your own findings may vary from these. Hopefully some will find this helpful or at least informational for their own wants/needs on the knives specs listed on the spread sheet below. Otherwise just a fun project for me to have worked on. I plan to add to this list as I/and my friends pick up other knives in the future, but this is a good start.
Sorry about the size or clarity of the image, but after a dozen or so tries to save/post it in any other format, this was the best I could do. Re-sizing your computer/tablet viewing window larger seems to help see it better.
FWIW concerning my experience and 'current' lack of knife throwing expertise, I actually enjoy throwing all of these knives listed and find all have there good points and some not so good. But that also varies with each and every one of us and our skill/experience level. Enjoy!
